March 2006

LOG-BOOK:

News about the Bird-flu is printed in red !

March 1st :  the Scop’s we took back yesterday hadn’t yet eaten by herself, so hand-feeding. The Hedge-hog had constructed again and the body-weight was 775 gram. Buzzard I was 705 gram and Buzzard II was 900 gram. The new Goshawk reached the 690 gram. At almost 1.30 p.m. a phone-call from Kallonís (Vet-practice of Chrístos Gógos) about a bird-of-prey > we went for a ride. Luckily it was “only” a Sparrowhawk and no Buzzard or Goshawk, because for those “tall-boys” we have no free cages anymore. At 5.30 p.m. a phone-call from the island of Chíos about a gull with a broken wing; was already in their possession for 10 days (and of course without any medical care) > if we could pick-up the bird from the ferry !! Trying to cure something in a broken birds-wing that’s after 10 days almost impossible, and as well there is a “prohibition transporting live birds”. So undoubtedly the bird will be refused on the ferry !! By the way, the State-vet knew nothing about such a prohibition !! But our colleague-hospital on Páros did !! So we’ll have a look how we’ll deal with that. Further a phone-call from Holland from our volunteer, who should arrive tonight: due to snow-fall and a huge power-cut in half a province she hadn’t been able to reach the airport in time today. So maybe tomorrow.

Could we report on February 5th about a Pigeon (first taken-back because of a bad condition and that date back to the Pigeon-cage in “The Keep”), today we had to take her back again > was gasping for breath. Locked-in separately. The Grey Heron had removed the bandages himself > injury without problems.

March 2nd:  all patients were still alive early this morning; even the taken-back Pigeon ! The Hedge-hog is more and more restless and will be released soon. Body-weight was 780 gram. The new Goshawk remained the same (690 gram), Buzzard I was 690 gram and Buzzard II 875 gram. Both birds had been fed only twice in stead of three times. The Sparrowhawk had diminished a bit (quite normal for the first day of intake) and was 184 gram. We have found-out what was the reason the taken-back Pigeon was gasping for breath: she wasn’t able to produce an egg ! After lots of good pressings she was again almost as good as before. For today we have planned lots of releases.

Releases:

And “lots of” meant at last 7 animals/birds: a) the Sparrows 05-166 (July 15th) and 05-188 (August 4th) > both came in as juveniles from our village. b) the Hooded Crow 05-107 (June 6th) from Mytiléne > came as well as a juvenile. c) the Eastern Hedge-hog 05-238 (November 9th) from Mytiléne > as well an ex-juvenile. d) the Dog-fox 06-006 (January 6th) from around our village > had been trapped in a snare and due to that had lost one rear-leg, and e) the “traffic-sign Goshawk” 06-016 (January 18th) from Pétra. We have tried to take pictures of the releases, but that’s only in a few cases succeeded: the Dog-fox ran away (on 3 legs) if the devil was behind him, the Goshawk disappeared at once in between the trees, the Hooded Crow didn’t know as well how quick he could disappear out of reach of the camera and the two Sparrows almost “got drowned” in such a huge airspace > gone !! We succeeded with the Eastern Hedge-hog and the Shelduck.

At 4.07 p.m. a phone-call from Lársos about a huge bird-of-prey, which was sitting already the whole day (and longer ??) in an olive-grove > didn’t seem to be normal behavior. So on the road again and (luckily!) we could spot the bird: showed to be a huge female Buzzard, which indeed wasn’t behaving normal. But (at approaching) she flew (indeed low over the field) with huge wing beats majestically away > so a ride for nothing !! Today the whole waterworks in the house-next-door were changed by polyethylene pipes. Late in the evening our new volunteer Mellanie from Holland arrived.

March 3rd:  Buzzard I was 705 gram and Buzzard II was 895 gram. The Goshawk “got stuck” on 690 gram and the Sparrowhawk was back again on intake-weight: 190 gram. Even before breakfast taken care the Grey Heron should have some extra to eat: two dogs were castrated. Further started to “muck out” the ruins some patients (Dog-fox, Shelduck, Gull etc.) had left behind. As well the table-flap the terrarium (ex-rubbish-dump) is standing-on was fastened again > the Dog-fox had damaged this quite a lot in his efforts to get out. The Grey Heron showed he wasn’t willing learning barking > had vomited the given testicles. Now the Barn Owls can have their party. At 5.20 p.m. a phone-call from Paleochóri about a (wild !!) cat with probably a “corpus alienum” in the mouth > will be brought. And it was a very old Tom-cat > see further by TOM-CAT

March 4th:  the Sparrowhawk was 198 gram, the Goshawk 705 gram, Buzzard I was 710 gram and Buzzard II was 890 gram. The wing-injury of Buzzard II starts to be clean. The injury under the beak of the Goshawk as well, only very slowly. Repairs were done in the House-next-door (storm-damages). A light was installed outside at the gate (street-side). Started repairing earth-quake-damages in the sealings.

Release:

At about 4.20 p.m. we have released the Grey Heron (06-029; February 24th ’06) in the water-inlet-channel of the Salines. There were present some other kinds of Herons (Little Egrets and Great White Egrets), so there is enough food over there. And for us there was nothing more we could do for this patient.

March 5th:  the Goshawk was in between 705 and 710 gram. Buzzard I (started to eat by himself) spurted till 750 gram, while Buzzard II was 905 gram. The Sparrowhawk was 200 gram.

Release:

At 9.06 a.m. we were able to release on a safe spot the Vixen (05-117; June 15th ’05). We were accompanied by the Vet Myrsíni Tourvalí, who first had treated the cub. Hereafter the wing of Buzzard I was remodeled > the surgery was performed by our traumatologist, with assistance of Dr Vet. Myrsíni Tourvalí. She loved to assistance to learn something more . . . .!! The whole day there was “hard labour” repairing earthquake-damages from the last 100 years !!

March 6th:  the Goshawk was 720 gram, Buzzard I was 810 gram and Buzzard II was 920 gram. The Sparrowhawk was 206 gram. There is continued with repairing of cracks, crevices and chinks.

March 7th:  power-cut from 6:10 till 9:00 a.m. !! Quite difficult grope-feeding ! Buzzard I was 810 gram, Buzzard II reached 930 gram and the Goshawk was 740 gram. The Sparrowhawk was 206 gram. Removing the feeding-bowls from the aviaries in “The Keep” we discovered a dead White Barn Owl on the bottom > was zealous “treated” as a prey by the other White Barn Owl we had treated some weeks ago > that one didn’t want to loosen her grip on her dead colleague ! With some difficulties the dead one removed and checked why she died and which bird it was. Showed to be 05-157, we picked-up July 11th ’05 in Stípsi. Had an injury in the palate, lots of bloody phlegm in the mouth and was bone-thin. P.M. showed a quite bloody tractus digestivus, with complete collapsed intestines. Cause of death: due to the injury not capable anymore to eat and died from starvation and loss of blood.  In between the pouring rain-showers capable to buy a new sack of stucco-plaster; the first sack (20 kg) was already empty !! But we had some real holes, you know !! In the House-next-door the electricity-system was made better. Continued with the restoration of walls etc.  And exactly (on the minute !!) after twelve whole hours we had a power-cut again for 90% > only some “Electronic Energy Saving Lamps” kept their light a bit longer. So a power-cut from 6.10 till 7.45 p.m. And that electricity was restored was thanks to the quarrels Ineke picked with the ΔΕΗ (electricity-company) > first they didn’t want to do anything, because it was only “local in the village” . . . We should wait till tomorrow-morning . . . . EU-member ??                                                                                                                                                 March 8th:  it’s a heavy wind this morning, but it is (still) dry ! The Sparrowhawk was unchanged 206 gram. She is starting to fly quite well. As soon as she is eating on her own, she is allowed “outside” for flying-practice. The Goshawk was 750 gram, Buzzard I was 840 gram and Buzzard I was 935 gram. And after we had written the above, it started thunder-storming, and of course “the computer collapsed again” > power-cut! Luckily everything was filed, so . .  While one of us went to the masseuse, our builder Aad started to repair the chimney (and the broken tiles) of the house-next-door > we had to buy new roof-tiles and of course . . . . this quite new “brand” didn’t exist anymore !! We were able to buy something that “looked-like”, but according to our Building-master “with concrete I can fix everything”. . And he succeeded; even without concrete !! Around 6 p.m. the two cats “Four-Spot” and “Starlet” came back for “de-mothering” (see as well February 10th ). Because “Four-Spot” seems to “terrorize” the house and isn’t behaving like we had brought her up, we decided to take her back > after all the “master” is a Greek and such a guy is kicking-out such an animal without any problems! In the meantime a (still name-less) “out-living” little Tom-cat has entered our life > a “strawberry-blond” tabby; a kitten from the tortoise-shell out of the neighborhood and (probably) the only survivor from the nest of 2005. He has lodged himself on the sealing of the surgery (and we hope he can control the rats and mice over there) > not in the statistics.

Bird-flu: although we published news about the bird-flu only on our web-site when it concerned Lesvos, we won’t keep away from you the following (present of our Dutch web-master and “changed” over here).

March 9th:  the Sparrowhawk was still 206 gram and the Goshawk 740 gram. Buzzard I was 845 and Buzzard II was 905 gram. The latter is (at last!) starting to eat by her own. We discovered this morning a dead Collared Dove in the Aviary > was impossible to find-out which bird exactly it had been. But every life is ending once. After 32 minutes “Starlet” was taken away the possibility to enlarge the stray-cat-population of Greece. The “construction-workers” started before breakfast to re-fasten the electricity-clock to the wall (had come loose from the wall) for “the eternity and five years”. We could remove from under the throat of the Goshawk an immense atherome-cyst (with grown-in feather). There is started with the reconstruction of the cat-feeding-place in the hall next to the kitchen.                                                                                                                  March 10th:  at last the Sparrowhawk had increased: 216 gram and the Goshawk as well: 775 gram. Buzzard I was 885 gram and Buzzard II was 925 gram. The White Barn Owl we reported about on January 1st and who a short time ago considered her dead comrade as a prey, was still alive at 6.30 a.m., but we discovered her dead at 8.00 a.m. The Scop’s is back to her aviary in “The Keep” after the necessary reparations were done there to avoid what had happened on February 28th .                                                                                                   Releases:  at 11.07 a.m. we could release 7 Rock-doves and Homing-pigeons: all “grey ones” and three of them had a colored ring, showing which one it was:                                                                                                The whole day one worked on the iron-construction of the Cat-feeding-place in the hall next to the kitchen. March 11th:  the Sparrowhawk is growing steadily: today 222 gram and the Goshawk had as well gained 5 gram: 780 gram. Buzzard I was now 900 gram and shows to be a female after all. Buzzard II was 950 gram > she only stopped “self eating”, so force-feeding again. The fracture of this bird is healed; only there is still a (slowly healing) skin-injury. Buzzard I is going into the good direction, only very slowly. The Sparrowhawk has on the left wing (where she had all those hemorrhages ) a very thick elbow > ?? In the Goshawk the Trichomonadiose is gone at last. However, on her back (where only a minor skin-injury was) she has a immense deep hole, connected with one of the air-sacks > emptied and “primed full” with Dermisol-cream. At around half past twelve there was again a power-cut, which lasted for almost one hour > lots of computer-work again had “melted”.                                                                                                                                              March 12th: there is a “weather-alarm” for the whole country: wind-force 10 Beaufort from the north with snow, black ice and more of those “fun”. The ferries are staying in the ports. Due to a break-down of the own balance, we had to use that one from the kitchen; so weights are with reserve: Sparrowhawk 225 gram, Goshawk 823 gram, Buzzard I was 920 gram and Buzzard II was 978 gram. We discovered dead this morning in the Aviary the Collared Dove (04-006; January 19th 2004 from our village) > came-in with a luxation of the shoulder that didn’t heal properly. Has kept up the fight for more than 2 years after all. Today we had to say good-bye to something that was build from poplar-wood in 1992 as a couch for the doggies; the “Doggies-home”. Some cats hade delivered in there and even people have slept on it !! Over here it was in use since 2001 (without the covering) as one of the places where cats were fed, with above the part of the draining-board which was cut-out for the sink. As a picture the situation like it was till today.

Two pieces of an arm-rest were kept as scratching-boards. And at 10.45 a.m. the situation was like this:

March 13th:  the Sparrowhawk was 232 gram and the Goshawk 835. Buzzard I was 950 gram and Buzzard II was 1010 gram. Today, forced by the bad weather, started with the replacement of the door to the “Apothíki” by one which is more cat- & rat-durable. As well the wall over there can be plastered at last. The new door will be the original one, which once (before 2001) closed the kitchen from the hall > that one is now being removed from old paint with electric-burning, flame-burning and chemicals. Was ready in the evening.

March 14th:  the Sparrowhawk was 232 gram and the Goshawk 860. Buzzard I reached 945 gram and Buzzard II reached 1030 gram. There was worked zealously hanging the door for the “Apothíki” > the whole door-frame had to be constructed. A little bit of scratch-wood from the old “Doggies-home”. The remnants of this became a “prey-of-flames” and doing so, one notices how cat-piss can stink > when it is been burned !! The wood was soaked with it !! A little bit after 4 p.m. a phone-cal about a dog (in probably not the best condition) > they wanted to pass-by at 6 p.m. And of course one didn’t arrive. In the evening the door was hanging and preparations were already made for the plastering.

March 15th:  the Sparrowhawk and the Goshawk both had gained a little bit: respectively 236 and 865 gram. Buzzard I reached 965 gram and Buzzard II reached 1055 gram. The Pigeon with problems laying an egg went back to the Pigeon-cage in “The Keep” > only isn’t able to fly well. The injury of Buzzard I was so bad, that amputation was the only solution. Assistance was given by Mellanie Karremans. The weight of the amputated wing was 86 gram. The new/old door to the “Apothíki” has received first a layer of pure olive-oil, making the “thirsty wood” a bit more prepared for the waxing later. The wall around still should be plastered. As a remembrance for the work Aad has done, a bronze letter A was fixed on the door (as well the initial of the room behind the door).

At 3.35 p.m. a phone-call about . . . . the dog (from yesterday) > now they should come tonight around 6. The this morning brought-back Pigeon we had to take back again from “The Keep” > was quite badly hurt on the left eye by other pigeons. Around 6 p.m. the Dog arrived (in the past we had removed his “crown-jewels”) > see 3rd Dog.

March 16th:  the Sparrowhawk was 236 gram and the Goshawk 890 gram. Buzzard I was now 850 gram and Buzzard II was 1050 gram > is time she should start eating on her own !! The amputation-injury of Buzzard I is clean and is smelling well. The Goshawk now has got a sinusitis on the right side as well > came from the left side ?? So CAF-cream. Today again a water-stop > one has to clean something . . . . . . !! The roof of “The Keep” was made more closed against rain > in the future only some tiles must be placed on top. At 2.45 p.m. a phone-call from the owner of the dog > had discovered the dog at midday (at arrival home) dead . . . !! Further questions from our side, showed the owner had been working with rat-poison in his barn, and the dog stayed over there as well   > probably cause of death is known now !! The repair of the damaged cage of the Dog-fox is almost ready now. In the evening we had a little party for Aad’s departure on Saturday.

March 17th:  the Sparrowhawk was 234 gram and the Goshawk was 885. Buzzard I in climbing-up again after the amputation and was 900 gram. Buzzard II was 1040 gram. At 8.10 a.m. 2 animals from the shelter in Skála Eressoú came for “de-fathering”. They left 2 hours later; an experience richer and an illusion less !! Except from two beds which had to” change rooms” from one house into the other, the door-frame of the door to the “Apothíki” got a new layer of paint. The cage, in which the Dog-fox had stayed, is usable again for a new patient. Buzzard II has been out the whole day: she will need lots & lots of flying-practice before she’ll be able to fly again a bit, if ever !!

The light in the “Apothíki” has got a “brand-new” switch > we can see now from outside if the light is burning or not. As well cables are hidden now.

Today is the last day of Aad’s stay over here, and to memorize what he all has done in those three weeks, an enumeration: making of an laminate-floor in the living & hall; repair of the waterworks in the House-next-door; repair of the boiler; repair of as well shutters as windows and the re-fastening of the window-frame in a room in the House-next-door; inventing & constructing of a cat-feeding-place; repair of the door-lock of the back-door of the car; repair of earth-quake-damages of the past century in both houses; closing of “rat-holes” in several sealings; the re-fastening of a Central-heating-radiator in a real “shit-wall”; repair of a broken-down chimney; repair of the roof here around; advised how to repair a leakage in the bathroom; sealing of the roof of “The Keep”; sealing of several window-frames in both houses from outside; sealing of the draining board; re-fastening of the electricity-watch; plastering of the wall around the repair; repair and plastering of holes in the walls of the bathroom, the “Apothíki” and in the room of “Mispoes”; the face-lift of an ancient door; the hanging of this door in a new constructed door-frame; the complete repair and plastering of the wall here around . . . . . (something forgotten ??)

Homage to Aad, and thanks a lot !!

“Ekathimerini” NEWS

Court’s venomous bite over viper protection

The European Court of Justice ruled yesterday that Greece has not been doing enough to protect a rare breed of viper that is mostly indigenous to the Cycladic island of Milos. Yesterday’s decision orders Greece to do more to protect the snake, known as Vipera schweizeri or the Cycladic blunt-nosed viper. The snake is on a list of endangered species and experts believe that half of the rare vipers can be found on Milos.                                                                                                                                       The court said Greece is doing little to protect the snake, arguing that sheep and cows are allowed to graze in an area used by the vipers to reproduce and rest. Mines also operate in the area, the court said.                                                                             Greece has argued that its current legislation and programs were sufficient to protect the endangered viper but the court said the measures were “fragmented.” (comment of our side: the only “measures” Greece is taking to protect snakes, is allowing the people to KILL everything that’s creeping and/or has no legs > informs against those behaviors are not taken serious  by the Police; in contrary > the reporter has a major chance  to end in a psychiatric hospital !!)

March 18th:  at 5.20 a.m. Aad has left for Holland, and according to the tradition of course . . . in the rain !! The Sparrowhawk was 236 gram and the Goshawk 885 gram. The right sinus of the latter is quite swollen !! Buzzard I hadn’t eaten well yesterday and had diminished: 865 gram. Buzzard II was 1065 gram. Around 7 a.m. in the Little-Owl-cage in “The Keep” an bitten Little Owl was discovered > was stuck in the netting. Was the disabled (ex-hung) one from last year (05-151; July 5th). Could we punctuate yesterday 2,5 cc fluid from the sinus of the Goshawk, today that was 3,5 cc. As well, the bird has a (wet) otitis externa on the right ear, while the left ear was complete filled with a hard, blackish crust.  Had both ladies started the day before yesterday with the re-organizing of the “Apothíki”, today is started as well with preparing of the first wall to be paneled. The frame-work of this wall was ready against 5 p.m. At 5.15 p.m. we discovered that the sinus of the Goshawk was swollen in such a way that the eye was pushed-away completely. Put her down to save her further suffering.

March 19th:   it was very quiet in the sick-bay . . . (without the Goshawk). The Sparrowhawk was 230 gram (is only fed twice a day), Buzzard I was 915 gram and Buzzard II was 1050 gram. The latter as well is only fed twice a day. The injured Little Owl had removed all the bandages by itself > injuries were clean ! As well the Sparrowhawk as Buzzard II were the whole day “out”.

March 20th:  the Little Owl had removed again the bandage around the leg !! The Sparrowhawk was 228 gram (and such after all the flying-activities from yesterday !!), Buzzard I was 940 gram and Buzzard II was 1055 gram. After breakfast chip-board was bought and started with the wall. This is the wall the cupboard with all the tinned-food etc. will be constructed > so for the account of the L.W.H. Around 5 p.m. we were with the boarding further than we were with the frame on Saturday.

March 21st:  the Sparrowhawk was 228 gram, Buzzard I was 885 gram (didn’t eat a lot yesterday) and Buzzard II was 1045 gram. The latter is receiving physiotherapies now for the stiff wing. On our way back from buying wood we received a phone-call from the Agrotikí Stégi in Kallonís (and we just came from that village!) that they had “a birdie for us”. First unloaded the wood (113 meters) and back > showed to be an adult Bullfinch. Except from the repair of an immense “short-circuit” in one of the connecting-boxes in the “House-next-door” (the whole contents had melted-away!), we came a lot further with the first cupboard in the  “Apothíki”.

March 22nd:  the Sparrowhawk was 228 gram (is flying better and better), Buzzard I was 905 gram (we had to feed her again yesterday) and Buzzard II was 1050 gram. Today the “big” tortoises went outside: 2 Testudo marginata and 4 Testudo graeca ibera. As well Buzzard I was for the first time “out”. At half past one a phone-call from Mytiléne about a pigeon > is send by coach. At 3.30 p.m. we discovered the Song-thrush (05-037, March 26th ’05 from Mória) dead on the bottom of the aviary. At 3.40 p.m. a phone-call from Pétra from an English woman about a just-born kitten (eyes still closed) > was brought. And it showed to be 3 of them > not all English people can count evidently !

March 23rd: the Sparrowhawk was 230 gram, Buzzard I was 910 gram and Buzzard II was 1035 gram. The first “cup-board-wall” in the  “Apothíki” was finished today and was already provisionally filled. We continued with the deposit for water-bottles and the deposit for cat-litter. The latter was ready at 6 p.m.

March 24th:  the Sparrowhawk was 230 gram, Buzzard I 910 gram (but is very active outside) and Buzzard II was 1030 gram. We made a “cultural excursion” with our volunteer Mellanie ( doing so, sprained an ankle > so a little bit “footicapped”). Due to this, only the tins with food could be provided with names in 3 languages. In the afternoon the deposit for water-bottles could be finished. In spite of the “sick foot” able to remove the old shelves (build in 2001 by two Vets as a temporarily storage for “everything and a bit more”). The wood still can be used (is 1-inch thick good old pine-wood).

March 25th:  the Sparrowhawk was 228 gram, Buzzard I was 910 gram and Buzzard II was 1030 gram. This morning 1 pregnant cat from the Shelter in Skála Eressoú. After the surgery there were 4 potential stray kittens less. As well there came a dog from Paleochóri for neutering. And in spite of all those surgeries we were able to do a lot in the “Apothíki”: first we had to empty the water-deposit (more than 300 liters of water) > otherwise we couldn’t remove the tank; after that we had to plane lots of rough wood. Half of the frame is on its place and the first piece of chip wood is screwed against it.

March 26th:  summertime ! For us for the time being no more time to spend, because we’re confirming us to the light (animals are doing the same after all !). The Sparrowhawk was 224 gram, Buzzard I was 920 gram and Buzzard II was 1025 gram. The latter still must be fed. The Bullfinch (see over there) went today “outside” in the Aviary for flying-practice. Continued with constructing in the “Apothíki” (left wall) and an extra earthed socket was made in the kitchen of the House-next-door.

March 27th:  the Sparrowhawk was 222 gram, Buzzard I was 920 gram and Buzzard II was 1040 gram. In the “Apothíki” first finished the cup-board against the left wall in a way we could “re-home” some materials from the old cup-board (back-wall). After that a part of that old cup-board was demolished and due to that we could finish the left wall. After the siesta continued and even a part of the back-wall was done.

March 28th:  the Sparrowhawk was 220 gram and Buzzard II was 1030 gram. Buzzard I was 905 gram and will stay (from today on) outside > so no measurements anymore. The “picked pigeon” (see March 15th) is brought to the Aviary > will not go back to the Pigeon-cage in “The Keep”.

The whole morning busy in the “Apothíki” with the left wall. At 5.40 p.m. the skeleton of the new cup-board was ready.

March 29th:  the Sparrowhawk was 214 gram and Buzzard II was 1065 gram. And at midday the left wall of the “Apothíki” was ready and already partly filled. Around 1 p.m. we enjoyed the solar eclipse, which was almost complete here around 2 p.m.  With the help of some “welding-masks” we could follow everything quite well. Around 4 p.m. the water-deposit was re-filled with more than 300 liter of water.

March 30th:  the Sparrowhawk was 212 gram and Buzzard II was 1065 gram. Today the last working-day of the volunteer  Mellanie Karremans. We’re expecting an excursion of a Secondary School from Ándissa this afternoon. At midday the whole wine-rack was removed and the wall had it’s complete framework ready. The school from Ándissa had 18 students and 2 teachers.

March 31st:  at 5.20 a.m. Mellanie left us, going home again. The Sparrowhawk was 220 gram and Buzzard II was 1060 gram. At 1.20 p.m. almost the whole back-wall in the “Apothíki” was wainscoted. And at 7.30 we were already busy with the constructing of the wine-rack.

Total amount of visitors this month:  20                        (total this year: 039)

Kinds of animals who are mentioned like this were for the first time in treatment in the L.W.H.

Amount of kilometers (Animal-Ambulance) for bringing-in/releasing animals this month 167 (total this year 0367 kilometers)

Total amount of intakes this month: 17 [wild ones: 04; others 13], (total this year 047 > : wild ones 021, others 026; total since the start of registration in 1996: 3291),  of which:

SPARROWHAWK (Accipiter nisus): 1 female, delivered via the Vet in Kallonís > left wing is hanging, but no fractured could be felt > observation. Is quite under-weighted: 190 gram in stead of 280 – 320 gram !!.

At further inspections we saw a in-shot hole in the biceps of the right wing (but no fractures) and a left under-arm which was one huge hemorrhage (and as well no fractures). No further injuries could be detected.

DOG (Canis familiaris): 5; the first 2 from Eressós;  “Billy” and “Coco” > de-fathered. The 3rd came from close to Achladerí and wasn’t in an optimal condition: eyes dirty and pussy, a streaming cold, quite a lot of dental tartar and so on. Tartar removed and medicines were given. As well food-advices were given. Discovered dead next day (see further March 16th). Number four came from the Shelter in Skála Eressoú > was “de-fathered” (had a little bit of problems with the injected Ketamine). The 5th was a stray from Paleochóri and over there with love taken-in by the Dutch woman Marjan.  We “offered” him quiet evenings in the future > there is no “need” anymore, so he can stay “cosy” inside.

TOM-CAT (Felis catus): 2; the first one a super-old specimen from Paleochóri > should be and very young and (probably) having a corpus alienum in the mouth. He had, except from 2 eye-teeth, nothing more left in the mouth. The left eye was light-stiff, both eyes were more than dirty and there were ear-mites like hell. The right-above eye-tooth was waggling like a drunken sailor > so that one we had to remove. As well lots of tartar were removed out of the extraction-hole. The eye-tooth right-under was still good fastened (and that tooth showed to be the “corpus alienum”) > left where it was. The broken stubs of the left eye-teeth were shortened, so they couldn’t damage anymore the tongue (was frayed !). Only soft food was prescribed. The 2nd came from the Shelter in Skála Eressoú > was “de-fathered” (should be deaf, but both ears were overfilled with ear-mites, so . . . . . !!)

CAT (Felis catus): 3; the first two from Dáfia;  “Four-Spot” and “Starlet” > for “de-mothering” > see March 8th !). The 3rd came from the shelter in Skála Eressoú and was very pregnant > so four potentially stray kittens less in future after the surgery.

LITTLE OWL (Athene noctua): 1 adult from the Little-Owl-cage in “The Keep” (came in last year as a juvenile from Mória, after discovered being hung with a rope on one of the two legs > lag later died-of at the foot). Got stuck in the netting of the cage and was attacked by rats: limb is even shorter now and a piece of bone is penetrating. Skin of the left wing between shoulder and pulse is bitten as well.

BULLFINCH (Coccothraustes coccothraustes nigricans): 1 adult male from Kallonís > injured on the left wing. No fractures could be diagnosed.

Went the 26th  to the Aviary for flying-practice.

PIGEON (Columba livia dom): 1 juvenile, snow-white specimen from  Mytiléne > old injury on the head.

KITTENS (Felis catus): 3, about one week old females (?) from Pétra > thrown-away alive in a plastic bag. Put down.
