June 2005 Total amount of visitors this month: 066 (total this year: 570) GENERAL NEWS: We were forgotten to mention, that one of our volunteers, who went to Skála Eressoú to help the Shelter over there, came back to help us on May 21st.
June 1st: early this morning our baby-Gull was 269 gram !! And when he/she came in May 23rd, it was only 52 gram ! Even the first big feathers are starting to grow. We started the day with the sterilization 0f the cat “Tári” (ex-04-231; October 2004). Four Dutch visitors. Around 5.30 p.m. a juvenile Pigeon came in. In the evening a phone-call from Mytiléne about a “not-flying pigeon” > will probably come tomorrow with the coach. June 2nd: our little Gull has started a “growing-spurt” since he/she yesterday moved-over to a bigger cage: at 6 a.m. the body-weight was 328 gram !! From the last remaining Aviary in the Wildpark only a part of the skeleton is present. Six visitors from Switzerland. A sick Pigeon taken from the coach at the Shell-Petrol-station. Around 6 p.m. we received a phone-call from Panagioúda about a Logger-head Turtle > however, because the animal was still in the sea and we don’t have a boat, we called in the Coast Guard to sail and have a look and, if possible, to catch the Turtle. At 6.25 p.m. they phoned us to tell they went for a sail. At 7 p.m. they phoned us again: they had the Turtle alongside, but couldn’t bring hem/her on board (was more than 80 cm from head to tail and the Turtle resisted heavily) and their boat was close to enter Turkish Territorial Waters !! The Turtle doesn’t seem te be injured. So for the time being the action was cancelled. At 7.50 p.m. again a phone-call: they had captured the Turtle. So at 7.55 p.m. we departed with blue light & siren > at 8.20 p.m. we arrived in Mytiléne (so low-flying !!) and after the Coast Guard had stopped all the traffic to lead us to the Turtle, we had him/her at 8.30 p.m. At 9.15 p.m. we were back at base and we had to try with the four of us to get this biting, more than 100 kilo creature into the sick-bay > at last we succeeded. The whole evening busy with trying to reach somebody by phone > NO-ONE could be reached !! June 3rd: our Baby-Gull was early this morning 350 gram. The Logger-head Turtle was still alive. Now we must try to get him/her to Athens for further treatment. The whole morning busy with phone-calls and as well with the making of the transport-case > 90 x 120 cm and 35 cm high. The Coast Guard was asked for help by the un-loading in Mytiléne and over here as well people we asked to help by the loading. At 4 p.m. we departed, after the Turtle had reached the yard on own force. And so we transported him/her to Mytiléne. The Coast Guard has taken care for the loading of the case on board of the “Theofilos”. The crew of this ship has kept the turtle wet during the whole trip to Athens > thanks for their efforts !! The efforts of the men of the Coast Guard are as well worth mentioning !! As well we picked-up an injured ROCK-DOVE from the coach > was announced by a Vet as a “Collared Dove” !! In the evening, after 9 p.m. we took-in a young TOM CAT, and we received a phone-call about a bird, that will arrive tomorrow by coach. June 4th: the Baby-Gull had gained weight yesterday with 24 gram. There was contact by phone with Glifáda > the Turtle had just arrived over there and was in a very lively condition. They will keep us informed about the further developments. We received a phone-call from Mytiléne about a bird that looks like a Sparrow, but it isn’t > is (luckily) going to be brought this afternoon in stead of taken from the coach. The last we did with the bird, announced yesterday evening > was a young JACKDAW. With the same coach arrived as well a young SWIFT > they phoned about this bird this morning. After the siesta the third bird was brought-in: a juvenile CHAFFINCH. Late in the evening a phone-call from Mesótopos about a Swallow (??) June 5th: all intakes of the last days are still alive!! The little Tom-Cat (June 3rd) isn’t all too well and even has been on a drip. The juvenile Jackdaw had gained weight in half a day with 10 gram, but our Baby-Gull covers all by gaining weight in 1 day with 74 gram > is now 448 gram ! We started the working-day with removing (under total-anesthetic) several “lumps” from the belly of the little goat “Mijla”. The juvenile Pigeon (05-093; May ’05 from Mytiléne > picked-up in a cafeteria over there) moved-over to the Pigeon-cage in “The Keep”. On our way to Skála Kallonís we had both a car-accident and we were able to rescue a Spurr-tighed Tortoise from rushing along traffic (not in the statistics) > the creature was later “delivered” from lots of tics and put for the time being in the aviary by the other tortoises. One phone-call from Mytiléne about a Hooded Crow > will be brought tomorrow. June 6th: the Jackdaw had gained weight with 2 gram, while the Baby-Gull had risen with 38 gram. After contact with some colleagues in Holland decided to feed this one more scanty. Two Dutch visitors. The yesterday announced Hooded Crow arrived > is a juvenile. Our transcendent “builder” from February, now on the Island for a holiday, came working a whole day to finish what he wasn’t able to finish in February, due to the bad weather > let’s pay tribute to that man !! During the afternoon the smallest of the two Baby-Pigeons (injured by other Pigeons; 05-095, May 29th ’05) passed away softly. June 7th: in the Wildpark all aviaries are “flat” now > we only have to gather useful materials. Two DOGS for First Aid. Five visitors today: 3 from Canada and 2 from Holland. A Phone-call from Mytiléne about a (probably juvenile) COLLARED DOVE > will arrive by coach. At arrival it showed to be a very young SWIFT. June 8th: the young SWIFT from yesterday was still alive early in the morning. The 2nd of the two Baby-Pigeons (see also June 6th) stopped breathing just after 6 o’clock this morning. Before it became too hot, we took all the netting from the demolished aviaries in the Wildpark and stored it in the “barn” over there. The last “bunch” of iron-profiles we took with us to the court-yard of the house-next-door. Two Greek visitors, of which one, Yiánnis, wants to come and help us as a volunteer !! A Vet Mytiléne phoned > she will send a little bird by coach. Only: we waited for nothing (and wasted our siesta !!) > no birdie was “on board”. In the evening an old DOG came in with digestion-problems. June 9th: dragging with 5 lengths iron of 6 meters long, halfway we were “picked-up” by a fellow townsman with a truck > he brought us home perfectly with the iron. As well he visited the Hospital (so 1 Greek visitor). And as well Yiánnis came and helped with cleaning cages. All iron parts were stripped from screws and stored for transport to the Shelter in Skála Eressoú. We received two Belgian visitors. After all the birds were moved-over to the renewed Aviary on May 3rd, today the first new-born Zebra-finches left their nests. All visitors are very positive about this “visiting-card” of the L.W.H. A phone-call from Thermís about a “small bird-of-prey” > will be send tomorrow by coach (??). After 9 p.m. people came with a BITCH > she had collapsed during a walk > everything was checked but nothing was found (not in the statistics). June 10th: because we had to go in the same direction, we picked-up the “small bird-of-prey” (they had said “the size of a small chicken”) > it showed to be an almost full-grown BUZZARD !! One Greek/American visitor. And a (probably) poisoned TOM-CAT came in. A phone-call from Glifáda about our Logger-head Turtle: the left eye is indeed definitive “gone”, but the right one can be saved. A fish-hook was inside as well, but the worst problem seems to be the cloacae > with that organ something is very wrong. After 7 p.m. by 3 DOGGIES we have removed lots of ticks (not in the statistics). June 11th: early in the morning we had a thunderstorm and of course there was a power-cut > we had to try to feed the BUZZARD (that one from yesterday) by the light of a gas-lamp > so poor fingers !! One PUPPY taken in after traffic-accident. In the afternoon two Dutch visitors. June 12th: the situation around the PUPPY from yesterday is still critical: she is still unconscious !! So we have a severe brain-damage ! The old “door-plate” from the Wildpark is removed this morning and has found a safe destination in the staircase of the House-next-door. Over there is hanging as well the old “door-plate” which was hanging first in Loutrópolis Thermís, and which was in use over here for the last 4 years. We took with us from the Wildpark as well some useful parts of wood. Because of the measures the sex of the BUZZARD showed to be positive male (mail from Holland). June 13th: the PUPPY is swallowing now and than some cc bouillon , but till now on that’s the only reflex she has. We could release 1 COLLARED DOVE. Transferred to the Aviary for flying-practice: 2 COLLARED DOVES (05-096 & 097). A juvenile SCOP’S OWL was picked-up in Pétra. Seven Dutch visitors. An adult HOUSE SPARROW was given First Aid > had tried to penetrate one of our windows and was beating the last gasp on the roof. Was discovered by one of the visitors. Later this day was released perfectly (not in the statistics). Further telephone from the Vet. Myrsíni Tourvalí in Mytiléne: she is coming tomorrow to bring a (young ??) FOX. As well telephone from the Island of Chíos: a woman will send with the ferry two young OWLS > tomorrow-morning at 8 a.m. they’ll arrive in the Harbor. Late in the afternoon again 2 Dutch visitors. Almost the whole evening the phone was ringing: all about the VIXEN-cub > the local television should evidently see her first before she can depart for here > so will come the day after tomorrow ?? June 14th: at 6 a.m. we phoned the “Port-Authorities” to know the exact time of arrival of the ferry > it turned out that 3 Ferries are coming: the first at 7.20, the second at 8 and the third at 9 a.m. Decided to go for the first ferry and so we left at 6.20 a.m. Luckily there came a phone-call from the ferry and we were lucky > it was the first! From out of a driving truck a small box was handed over and we were 2 juvenile SCOP’S OWLS richer !! In the morning 5 visitors: 2 from Belgium, 2 from Holland and 1 Greek (who is living in Australia). The last days we received several phone-calls about a TOM-CAT from Mólivos > should be in a terrible condition. At 6 p.m. he arrived > see further by the 3rd TOM-CAT. Because, according to the Vet in Mytiléne, the Vixen-cub has one (badly) damaged eye, we contacted two of our colleague-centers in Holland with the question: “is it at all significant to bring-up such a handicapped animal for a life in the wild?” After we received from several sides the answer that her chance for surviving will be about 75%, we are going to give it a try. According to the same (still in charge for treatment) Vet, the poor soul had Typhus as well, and she had been able to “cure” this within 2 days . . . . . . June 15th: we didn’t took any pictures anymore from our “Baby-Gull”, so today we took a picture with the cup she was sitting on during his/her first “Photo-session” .[for a comparison see May 2005]. Around 9.10 a.m. we could take-in the VIXEN-CUB > see further over there. Four Dutch visitors and as well 4 Greek visitors from our village. The PIGEON (05-083; May ’05,) which was “re-built” by Chickens & Helmeted Guinea fowl into an “Emmenthaler-chicken” was taken back this morning by the owner > however, was brought-back in the afternoon, because it wasn’t flying and this time it was pecked by other Pigeons. From tomorrow we’ll give it a try in the Pigeon-Aviary in “The Keep”. As well in the afternoon a complete nest of young House-Sparrows was brought in. Early in the evening two Greek visitors, who came to make us “happy” with a dead SPARROW (died on the way to the L.W.H.). June 16th: ALL new intakes from yesterday were still alive this morning!! The here above mentioned PIGEON is lodged in the Pigeon-Aviary in “The Keep”. We received a phone-call from Mytiléne > in the village of Pámfila they had an injured HEDGE-HOG > will be brought tomorrow. Further again a call from Pétra: a second SCOP’S OWL was discovered (only flew away out of their hands) > they should call us later again. In the afternoon a phone-call from Ánaxos: by building-activities they had disturbed yesterday the nest of a Barn-Owl > 3 chickens were still present. We low-flying to there. On the spot the cable of the clutch broke down !! It was difficult reaching the nest, because there was no ladder present !! The garage was phoned and so we had to wait for help. In the meantime our volunteer tried to warm-up the smallest chicken (which was supercooled and starving) in between her breasts > once there was a song from George Brassens, named “Brave Margot” about the same situation, only with a kitten !! With an exchange-car from the garage we at last reached the L.W.H. At arrival a juvenile SPARROW was brought-in. In the evening a juvenile COLLARED DOVE was brought-in > seems to be a little bit strange ! Further we are expecting tomorrow the injured EASTERN HEDGE-HOG and an injured PIGEON from Mytiléne (both with the same coach ??) and from the Shelter in Skála Eressoú they are coming with a CAT with a grass-seed in its eye > they visited already a Vet, but very little was done . . . . June 17th: again a hectic day: first the PUPPY started to awake out of her coma !! Hereafter an “injured Stork” was reported on the main road to Kallonís > with the exchange-car we went downwards > showed to be a poisoned YELLOW-LEGGED GULL. We succeeded to bring this bird home, but we had to turn immediately: with the coach from Kallonís there was coming a little bird > was an almost full-grown SWIFT. Hereafter there wasn’t one cat coming from the shelter in Skála Eressoú; there were coming two > see further by CAT. Than by coach arrived the fore-said EASTERN HEDGE-HOG and the PIGEON > see further over there. Hereafter we discovered the PUPPY dead in its cage . . . . A phone-call about a SPARROW (will maybe be brought today) and about a BAT from Mytiléne (will come probably tomorrow by coach). Late in the evening the Baby-Bat was brought ! June 18th: the 2nd of the nest of 5 thrown-away KITTENS (05-063; April 23rd ’05) died early this morning. Since yesterday she hadn’t been eating any more. During the morning-hours the owner of the 2 dogs (which had grass-seeds in their paws; see June 7th ) came back with his pets > again the same history. Under local anesthetic the bulbs opened and by one dog we could remove a seed. By the other we couldn’t find anything (but that seed has a way-out now). We didn’t book this “actions” in the statistics. The owner visited as well the Hospital. At 5 p.m. we had, at last, our own car back. About 7.30 p.m. we took-in a SPURR-TIGHED TORTOISE and later that evening a juvenile HOUSE-SPARROW. June 19th: from the nest of young SPARROWS (see June 15th) the first went to heaven this morning. We went to Paralía Thermís for a release-try of the BUZZARD > didn’t succeed. June 20th: while we are “celebrating” Whit Monday, the 2nd of the nest of young SPARROWS was thinking it still was Ascension Day and acted consequently. We used the beautiful Whit Monday to buy some trees & scrubs for the Aviaries. On the road we received a phone-call about an old DOG from Mólivos > must probably put down. The local Vet is on principle refusing to do so (in no case !!) . One Greek visitor. At 4 p.m. the owners of the DOG were at the Town Hall and at the same moment an injured LITTLE OWL should be picked-up at the Agrotikí Stégi in Kallonís. At 9.40 p.m. a phone-call from Mesótopos about an injured PIGEON > they’ll see if they can send the animal tomorrow in our direction. June 21st: early this morning everyone was alive !! The situation of as well the injured HEDGE HOG as of the injured LITTLE OWL remains critical. The BABY-BAT is as well still alive. The remaining 3 thrown-away KITTENS (see as well June 18th) aren’t doing quite well > we have to try everything to keep them alive. At the Agrotikí Stégi we picked-up the injured PIGEON, but as well a thrown-away KITTEN. June 22nd: the severe injured LITTLE OWL was discovered dead early this morning. One juvenile SPARROW was taken-in (was bitten by a cat). Picked-up from the coach from Mytiléne a PALLID SWIFT; they phoned already yesterday about this bird and today again. At 6.15 p.m. again a juvenile SPARROW. Hereafter 2 Dutchmen as visitors (they had as well with them 2 PUPPIES from Skála Kallonís > they are going to take them to Holland). June 23rd: the ginger little TOM-CAT (one of the remaining 3 thrown-away kittens) was this morning almost dead. Gave her last breath at 3.32 p.m. in our hands. We performed a P.M. on the HEDGE-HOG. Four visitors from Holland today. A phone-call from Pétra about a, discovered in the mountains, PARTRIDGE > will be brought today (??). Just after 6 p.m. another juvenile SPARROW. The CHUCKAR was brought around 6.30 p.m., while almost at the same moment again a SPARROW was brought-in. June 24th: busy with restoring the FOX-CAGE in “The Keep” : concrete and stone > is quite difficult, because it isn’t so high over there . . . . ! June 25th: today we were able to repair about 25% of the walls in the FOX-CAGE. Back-problems and the increase of the temperature over there urged us to stop for today. Late in the afternoon a Greek visitor > he has to do something with “Glifáda” and could tell us there were 2 fish-hooks in the Caretta, but as well that the chances for a relief were very good ! June 26th: in the FOX-CAGE we’re now about half-way. We had to remove ALL little Tortoises from the renewed Aviary, because they were severe attacked by ANTS > by some animals we had to fear for their eyes! In the evening we were able to remove a grass-seed from the eye of a PUPPY > we were in time, otherwise the eye should be lost (the puppy is lodged on the filed behind our house, where during the day our goat-let “MijLa” is allowed to feed > not in the statistics). June 27th: again we discovered a dead SPARROW. At 10.15 a.m. all the walls in the FOX-CAGE were done. Now only the basement for the water bowl. And that was finished as well at midday. Hereafter 4 Dutch visitors. We received a phone-call from Glifáda, about “our” Logger-head Turtle: one of the two swallowed fish-hooks is removed in the meantime; they will wait with the second one till the animal regains more strength. The problems with the cloacae seems to be solved. In the evening two Dutch visitors. June 28th: around 6 p.m. we “collected” a (probable ??) SPARROW at the Agrotikí Stégi. June 29th: at 9.30 a.m. a poisoned little BITCH from the village over here. Some phone-calls from Mólivos about a young SPARROW (?) > will arrive with the 1 p.m.-coach from there. At 6.30 p.m. again a juvenile SPARROW. June 30th: two visitors from Belgium (one of them a real Veterinarian)
Kinds of animals who are mentioned like this were for the first time in treatment in the L.W.H. Amount of kilometers (Animal-Ambulance) for bringing-in/releasing animals this month 614 (total this year 2001 kilometers) Total amount of intakes this month: 55 [wild ones: 41; others 14], (total this year 171 > : wild ones 090, others 81; total since the start of registration in 1996: 3125), of which: CAT (Felis catus): 3; the first from the L.W.H. > “Tári”. Was one of the cats which came in October 13th 2004, injured by battery-acid > now she was de-mothered (just in time, because she was almost in season). The second came from the shelter in Skála Eressoú: had indeed a grass-seed in its eye; was removed under total anesthetic. Number 3 had 2 weeks ago a whole splash of Thinner had over her skin > she had tried to clean the skin by licking. As well the skin was etched away, but also the mouth, tongue and the whole tractus digestivus were so severe damaged that eating and/or drinking was impossible. Because of “Prognosis infaust” put down. KITTEN (Felis catus): 1 little TOM-CAT; “delivered” via the Agrotikí Stégi > was thrown-away with about 2,5 - 3 weeks old. PIGEON (Columba livia dom.): 1 juvenile “Peacock” from Ágia Paraskeví > observation digestion-problems. Went June 20th to the Pigeon-Aviary in “The Keep” STREET-PIGEON (Columba livia dom.): 3; the first an adult from Mytiléne > bone- & bone-thin. The crop was overfilled with a “porridge-like mélange” > emptied. One Spartrix was given in case of Trichomonadiosis. Further observation and wait & see. Died in the evening > NO P.M. was done. The second was also from Mytiléne and had Trichomonadiosis in a severe stage > 1 Spartrix was given, but we haven’t much hope. In the meantime lost of that “yellow stuff” has been removed. Discovered dead in the morning of June 23rd. The 3rd came from Mesótopos; is juvenile and had an immense hole in the left thigh > stitched and put on the antibiotics. LOGGER-HEAD TURTLE (Caretta caretta): 1 adult, discovered in open sea outside Panagioúda > see for report June 2nd . Is blind on the left eye and with the right one she/he can hardly see > so now it’s understandable why there was a swimming in circles. Tried to contact the Turtle-Center outside Athens > different from here over there no-one was reachable in the evening. By the way, the creature is more than 100 kilo and measures from nose till the end of the shell 109 cm !!. ROCK-DOVE (Columba livia): one adult female from Mytiléne > open fracture left wing. Was send-in by a Vet (and of course NOTHING was done with the injury). Antibiotics-spray and hanging cast were given. Was transferred June 13th to “The Keep”. TOM CAT (Felis catus): 3; the first a quite young specimen from Ágia Paraskeví > what’s exactly the case, we still don’t know, but somewhere there is something wrong. So observation. May 6th some improvement began. However, the 13th he had severe breathing-problems > it looked like there was a huge obstruction in the upper-part of the trachea. With “vibrations-by-hand” we tried to let him cough > no result. Atropine was injected in the hope that, while vomiting , as well a good cough should start. Died later that morning. P.M. > there was a pleuritis exsudativa with a total degeneration of the lunge-tissue. The second came from our village as well and was probably poisoned > Atropine & Apomorfine were injected. Went back in a good condition. The 3rd came from Mólivos and had a severe gangrene in the nose > due to the age we put him down at once ( the stench was so heavy, we had to ventilate the surgery !!) We’ll spare you the pictures !! JACKDAW (Corvus monedula): 1 juvenile from Mytiléne. Went June 22nd to the Crow-Aviary for training. SWIFT (Apus apus): 3; the first a quite juvenile from Mytilene. Discovered dead early on June 6th. The 2nd was announced as a Collared Dove !! Is as well very young, so . . . . Till now on (June 11th) he/she is doing quite well !! In spite of the well-growing, we had to put him/her down June 29th > showed to be stone-blind !! The third came from Kallonís > is almost full-grown. Didn’t wake-up anymore the 18th. PALLID SWIFT (Apus pallidus): 1 adult from Mytiléne > was discovered yesterday (June 21st) > release over there wasn’t successful. So observation. CHAFFINCH (Fringilla coelebs): 1 juvenile from Mytiléne. As well discovered dead early on June 6th. HOODED CROW (Corvus corone cornix sharpii): 1 juvenile from Mytiléne > discovered already May 28th and kept in a small cage. Is very dirty (logical !!) but is fed well. Went June 13th to the Crow-Aviary for training. DOG (Canis familiaris): 2 from Ágia Paraskeví (1-1) > both dogs with leg-injuries due to penetrating grass-seeds. Both dogs were already seen by a Vet > only antibiotics were given, but the grass-seeds were not removed !! By both animals under local-anesthetics the leg opened and grass-seeds removed. Injuries stitched. (see as well June 18th) . BITCH (Canis familiaris): 2; the first was a 14-year old one from Mólivos; indeed an “Old-timer” > we were able to put her asleep on the lap of her owners with all of us present. (see as well June 20th). The 2nd was an about 8 months old girl from the village over here, which had the luck to be hit by a car > that’s why she was brought here and we noticed she was hit by a car because she was poisoned first ! Could hardly look out of her eyes !! The “traffic-injuries” were minimal (only some lumps & bruises), but with the help of Atropine & Apomorfine we could make her vomit and later she could be brought home (wagging the tail) !! DOG (Canis familiaris): 1 more than 12 year old male from Ágia Paraskeví > hadn’t been eating for 2 days and was vomiting bile. As well no droppings were produced. The belly is flexible. Some oil was injected into the rectum and feeding-advices were given. One day later a phone-call > doggy had produced droppings and as well was eating again > case closed. BUZZARD (Buteo buteo): 1 not yet full-colored species from the fields around Paralía Thermís > vague intake-reasons > didn’t fly away and was easily to be caught. So observation. Is according to its measures a male. Went June 15th to the Buzzard-aviary, so we can see how his flying-capacities are. Those were so well, that we tried to release him on June 19th > didn’t succeed !! It seems he has eye-problems, because a good landing (on a roof) was a crash-landing. So back to the Buzzard-Aviary. PUPPY (Canis familiaris): 1 little “girl” from Ágia Paraskeví > probably hit by a car > severe nose-bleeding and not till hardly “approachable” . Because of the pain, Metacam was injected. Was as well “one bunch of flees” > so carefully some powder was used. However, the prognosis isn’t all to well . . . . The day after intake she was still unconscious, although she was reacting a little bit more on stimulus from outside. Subcutaneous a transfusion with Dextrose 5% was given. Opened her eyes after 6 days in coma !! Went that same day to heaven . . . . . . . !! SCOP’S OWL (Otus scop’s): 3; the first was a juvenile from Pétra > was discovered there under a huge tree > evidently an “astling”. The next two came from the Island of Chíos and were picked-up from the ferry in Mytiléne. They are as well juvenile and a bit younger (and so smaller and not so heavy) as the first one. Went all three June 28th for the first time (for some hours) to the “Scop’s-Aviary” in “The Keep” for flying-practice. VIXEN-CUB (Vulpes vulpes): 1 quite thin “scraggy” from/via Mytiléne > the right eye is definitively “gone” (although we’ll start a treatment with CAF-ointment to avoid further infections). The whole condition however isn’t like one should expect after a stay of 5 days by a Vet . . . . . . . After one day treatment with CAF-ointment there is already no pus excrete any more from the eye !! We are wondering what could has been improved in a 5 days stay by a Veterinarian !! For sure, stealing the show on TV, but NO treatment !! In about one week the destroyed eye will be removed and the opening closed. And now we are today one week further, we won’t keep her eye away from you: . It improves so well, that we aren’t planning any surgery anymore and will continue with the treatment with CAF-ointment. We can even see a pupil again in the eye and the “porte-d’entrée” is closing itself!! HOUSE SPARROW (Passer domesticus): 13; first 5 small creatures, discovered by the school in the village here (nest destroyed by children ??) > we are going to give it a try, as well because it’s a good “learning-object” for as well the trainee as for our volunteer. The first of this “pack” we discovered dead in the nest June 19th. The second one day later and the third followed the 26th. Number 4 stayed alive one day longer. And the last went that same day, only late in the afternoon. Hereafter another, ut bigger, juvenile from our village. Discovered dead in its cage early in the morning of June 18th. That same day we could rescue another juvenile > fell down on the terrace of the cafeteria where we were eating > taken-in. (died June 29th ). The 8th was as well a juvenile and taken out of the mouth of a cat > 3 days of antibiotics and further wait & see. Died around midday of June 25th. Number 9 was a juvenile as well and came from our village, just like all the predecessors. The same was the case with the 10th ( this SPARROW died next morning). The 11th came-in almost 3 quarters later > ditto-ditto. Number 12 came from Mólivos and was brought by the coach by the discoverer > she went back with the same coach !! The sparrow is juvenile and some of the big feathers of the left wing are missing (discovered dead next morning). The 13th was brought-in at 6.30 p.m. by children from this village. SPARROW (Passer domesticus) ?? : 1 juvenile, “delivered” by the Agrotikí Stégi in Kallonís > it looks like a sparrow, but it has an explicit white “eyebrow-line” and juvenile sparrows don’t have > so ?? WHITE BARN-OWL (Tyto a. alba): 3 juveniles from Ánaxos > by working with a compressor the parents had fled and didn’t return. They had tried to feed the chickens with salami, but of course without success. (see further by June 16th). COLLARED DOVE (Streptopelia decaocto): 1 juvenile from Mytiléne > has a problem (inborn defect ??) but we still don’t know exactly what > so : Wait & see. YELLOW-LEGGED GULL (Larus cachinnans michael.): 1 adult, discovered alongside the main road to Kallonís > was announced as an “injured STORK”. Had eaten “something wrong”. We were able to inject Atropine, but he/she died hereafter. EASTERN HEDGE-HOG (Erinaceus concolor roum.): 1 (quite) young female from Pámfila > severe injured on the mouth (skin & bone). Had some immense ticks. Was breathing the day after intake very difficult > so the prognosis is ?? The last days she is hanging on a drip with 5% Glucose (subcutaneous), because she can hardly drink. Died in the afternoon of June 22nd. P.M. > the belly was enormous swollen. At opening she almost completely went flat. But also the stomach was inflated. Cause of death: by swallowing air (she couldn’t breath anymore by the nose) she had inflated herself and due to that heart- & lung-functions were hampered. PIPISTRELLE (Pipistrellus pipistrellus): 1 little baby from Mytiléne > body-weight is under 2 gram !! After one week of trying the battle was lost > strictly speaking: the battle was lost on forehand, but never shooting is always a failure ! SPURR-TIGHED TORTOISE (Testudo graeca ibera): 1 adult from somewhere in the fields around our village > skin-damage and lots of ticks. LITTLE OWL (Athene noctua indigena): 1 juvenile from/via the Agrotikí Stégi in Kallonís > brain-damage (due to traffic-accident ??) > the left eye remains “back” when a light-stimulus is given. Discovered dead early in the morning of the 22nd. Chukar juv. (Alectoris chukar) (as a “tame” one we have had this kind of birds several times, but till now on never a juvenile from the wild. One out of the mountains above Pétra > was discovered on the roads over there and didn’t fly away. Seems to have received a “kiss” from a car > is tumbling, while there are no fractures and there is as well no demonstrable brain-damage > observation. By a further observation the bird is bending the spinal cord (line beak > tail) and there is an injury on the left side of the head. The legs however are used now and then, so a brain-damage is the most possible option. By the way: the head was covered with ticks ! A further problem is, that the crop isn’t emptying easily > so the poor creature is starving with a full crop !! After a change of food this improved and some efforts to stand-up are done already. June 29th there was a try to walk again !! |
