February 2007

LOG-BOOK:

News about the Bird-flu is in red and about the environment in blue

February 1st:  the Pigeon, suspected of Salmonella (07-009; January 26th) is transferred to the pigeon-cage in “The Keep” > the “bulb” on the right wing has as good as disappeared. We could remove half of the stitches from the face of the little Tom-cat (07-007; January 22nd) on the places where the eyes had been. We made a profit from the still presence of Ineke by letting deliver almost till the door of 144 tins of cat-food !! From the Internet:

Dry days for water supply

Greece must manage its water better to prepare for the rainless times ahead, an expert warned yesterday, after data showed that January was one of the driest months in recent years.

Giorgos Kallergis, a professor of hydrogeology at the University of Patras, told Kathimerini that Greece manages water only so it can meet consumer needs and unnecessarily wastes it with antiquated practices.

”At a time when other European countries have introduced drip irrigation systems, we continue to use ‘cannons’ in Thessaly,” he said. The agriculture sector is the main culprit for draining the country’s water resources, demanding 86 percent of reserves.

Experts believe that the introduction of recycling schemes will help save used water from being unnecessarily thrown away into the sea.

In the evening we could remove the remaining stitches from the head of the little Tom-cat.

February 2nd:  because the 2nd re-stitched cat wasn’t so cooperative, we had to use a light anesthetic to remove the stitches from the belly > the injury has fantastic healed !! Now all three cats can go back to the shelter in Skála Eressoú next Sunday. We removed the splint and the hanging cast from the wing of the shot Yellow-legged Gull (07-010; January 26th). Now observation of the use of the wing. He/she is starting to walk better and better. We bought 50 meter aluminium-profiles in Mytiléne for completing the cages in the Sick-Bay. Later this morning it showed the Gull had been freed too early from splint & hanging cast (or he/she had forced the wing ??) > we had to splint again. We made a picture from the surgery-result in the face of the little Tom-cat

( N 1: Jan. 22nd  & 2: Febr. 2nd ) At 6.45 p.m. our Secretary, María Karapolíti, came with a knocked-down puppy > see further over there.

February 3rd:  the baby Marginated Tortoise was 59 gram. The shot pigeon from Íppio had vomited last night all the given food > so no good omen !! At last the Yellow-legged Gull started to eat on it’s own !! At 10.45 a.m. all the cages in the Sick-Bay were finished; including the covering strips. Melanie started taking-over some of the jobs Ineke did normally, while Jeroen was trying to finish the floor in “The Keep”; the basement for a smaller cage is laid as well. And that was finished at 1.20 p.m. And while their mother Médie was discussing with Ineke how she could be a help in the coming days, her two children were shown around. It showed to be that the White Barn Owl, taken-back from “The Keep” January 28th, had been injured on the breast as well > attacked by cage-mates ?? Only at 8.30 p.m. we succeeded in contacting our Secretary about the puppy from yesterday-evening: was doing fine and no blood was urinated anymore. The little one was already back to her mother . . . . of course much to early, because one can’t control anymore the bleeding !! But try to make thát clear to Greek !!

February 4th:  the eye-less little Tom-cat has recovered soo well from the surgery, that he tries (with his leg !) to steal the food of the Yellow-legged Gull out of his bench . . . !! So less worries for the future now anymore. We could remove the agrafes from the shot-injury in the crop of the Pigeon > that has healed well. However, after removing of the agrafes from the shot-injury in the breast, a whole plaque of dead tissue & feathers could be removed > the now clean hole was closed again with 1 agrafe. And while this was written (8.45 a.m.), huge snow-flakes came falling from the sky . . . . !! The snow-fall was so heavy, that the cab-driver (who should bring Ineke to the Airport) wanted to leave earlier, because he didn’t know how the weather should be in the mountains !! “Table Mountain” was invisible due to the falling snow !! At 11.55 a.m. the 3 cats from the Shelter in Skála Eressoú were picked-up (“gliding” through snowy mountains !) and 10 minutes later Ineke left . . . .

February 5th:  the baby Marginated Tortoise was 61 gram this morning. And Douglas was here at 7.45 a.m. so we could go and buy meat and animal-foods. Today that was 12.495 kilo at an amount of 75,63 Euro. Total this year 76,535 kilo for 463,65 Euro. And just after nine o’clock Frans & Melanie came to help to have the meat, the liver and the minced-meat done. From our side there was hard labour emptying some of the new build cages, creating as well again a sleeping-place for Foúrno and the re-arrangement of a place we can store our “feeding-tools”.

February 6th:  we have discovered that the shot Yellow-legged Gull (07-010; January 26th ’07) due to a shot-pellet there is as well a (not yet healed) fracture of the right femur. This isn’t splint able, so should heal with rest. Because we couldn’t leave home, started with the tiling (green color) of the 2 big cages in the Sick-Bay > we had finished the measuring & cutting, when at 10.30 a.m. we received help from Médie, who started with sweeping. Meanwhile we were able to get the partition for the double cages > we had it for free !! Médie went home with a huge plastic dog’s basket from here, because yesterday two goats had delivered (each of them twins) and the weakest two will be brought-up by hand at home. At 5.33 p.m. a phone-call from molivos about an injured gull or a tern > because we couldn’t leave to pick-up the bird we’ve asked to bring the bird to Melanie, who is coming tomorrow to assist us.

February 7th:  at 8 a.m. we had the bird in our hands; probably a MEDITERRANEAN GULL > see further over there. At 11 a.m. the 2 floors in the double cages were laid and filled > now only the cleaning. Melanie kept herself busy with amongst other things the preparing of the House-next-door for the new trainees, who are coming next Friday. At 3.03 p.m. a phone-call from Pérama that people were waiting over there in a kafeníon with an injured bird of prey > at top speed the dogs & the cats were fed and at 3.55 p.m. we had the bird in our hands > a shot BUZZARD > see further over there.

And at 5.45 p.m. Ineke was back . . . .

February 8th:  meanwhile we have heard that the Gull indeed is a Mediterranean Gull and that it’s a female. The sex of the Buzzard is still not known > measurements are just in between. All patients were still alive this morning and the Buzzard had gained weight from 671 gram at intake till 687 gram. We have discovered that probably there are no fractures in the wing of the Buzzard > only “Emmenthaler-cheese”. And at 10.45 a.m. the double cage was completely ready and the Yellow-legged Gull became its first inhabitant. The bench he was sitting-in for the last weeks first should be cleaned and de-rusted completely, so we can store it again. The day-cage for the Hoopoe is hanging now on the wall, but in a way the bench can be placed under it if necessary. At 2.07 p.m. a phone-call from Variá about a black ducklet with a red bill (Moorhen ??) which should be somewhere over there in not such a good condition > if we couldn’t come and look for the bird . . . . We have told her, that we couldn’t do so and that she first should try to get the bird > we will be informed about the results later . . . . (??). The Buzzard is trying more and more to stand on his feet in stead of laying on the floor.

February 9th:  the baby Marginated Tortoise was 62 gram and the Buzzard had gained weight with 50 gram and was 737 gram. We could remove the agrafe from the injury in the breast of the shot Pigeon from Íppio > this injury has closed well and there was no “cheese” anymore. However, the shot-injury in the crop had such an amount of “cheese”, that we had to open the injury again to remove it > more than a full tea-spoon !! Was full of buckwheat-seeds ! Closed with 1 agrafe. In the House-next-door the flushing of the toilet is (we hope ??) made leak-free with silicones. And because we had to open a new tube, we repaired as well the gutter above the entrance of “The Keep”. As well we made 4 new “cage-hooks” (with those one can keep the doors of cages open while cleaning). From the Internet:

Bird flu is in Europe to stay

EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou warned Europeans during a visit to Athens yesterday that they had to “get used to” outbreaks of flu in the poultry sector.

Kyprianou said he could not rule out new outbreaks of the disease, which can be fatal for humans, after it was discovered in Britain on the premises of Europe’s largest turkey producer.

The commissioner urged Europeans not to be overly concerned and said the current climate of “panic” was not justified as the conditions needed for the disease to be transmitted to humans hardly exist in Europe.

Kyprianou said that protection measures in Europe are adequate to combat bird flu, which has killed 166 people worldwide since 2003. Nobody in Greece has been killed by the H5N1 virus.

The EU official was in Athens to launch a Greek-language version of the European Union’s health website (http://health.europa.eu).

Kyprianou said the website aims to give people reliable advice about health issues and ways to follow a healthy lifestyle.

At 3.49 p.m. a phone-call from Mólivos about a gull with a broken wing > they wanted to bring the bird themselves . . . . !! And at 4.50 p.m. someone came to have his bitch given the contraceptive injection; something that didn’t at all happen with the agreement of this dog. Not in the statistics. And as a “closure of the day” arrived at 9.30 p.m. both new trainees Hilda & Jessica.

February 10th:  the baby Marginated Tortoise was 63 gram and the Buzzard 766 gram. We removed the bandages from the wing of the Mediterranean Gull > injury is smelling well. The splint from the wing of the Yellow-legged Gull is removed as well and the fracture seems to be connected. Both trainees had a complete tour-around and watched the changing of the bandages of both gulls.

February 11th:  the Buzzard was 788 gram this morning. Luckily today we could do all the cleaning of cages in “The Keep” and as well outside. With a threat for their own lives (they thought themselves) and a Muslim-like head-coverage there is scraped and flushed in the cages of beasts of prey. A reassurance for the home-front: both ladies are as “intact” as they arrived over here. And as a compensation for the “suffered anguishes” we made a quick excursion to the Kremásti-bridge.

February 12th:  the little Marginated Tortoise had gained weight with 1 gram and was 64 gram. The Buzzard had gained weight with 23 gram and was now 811 gram. We could transfer back to the Barn Owl-cage in “The Keep” the taken-back January 28th White Barn Owl; however for how long . . . . ?? The hanging cast was removed from the wing of the shot Yellow-legged Gull > the position of the wing is a 100% OK. If this progression remains, we can think about a release in ± 1 week. We removed as well the hanging cast from the wing of the Buzzard. With the bitch “Mítsi” (06-223; 0ctober 25th ’06) we went to the vet in the Agrotikí Stégi in Kalloní because she had a severe otitis externa in the left ear. There the advice was given to start with Garamat. Today it was the weekly “meat-cutting-day” and under the inspiring supervision of Douglas and the superintendence of Ineke both trainees had for the first time to “process” 12,125 kilo meat, liver & minced meat (total amount 74,02 Euro). Till now on this year 88,660 kilo for 537,67 Euro. With a bit of risk for the own life the vine, which had grown rank on top of the buzzard-cage, was clipped before it could start sprouting.

February 13th:  the Buzzard was 833 gram this morning. Both Spurr-tighed Tortoises from the terrarium (06-055a-b; April 24th ’06) were transferred as the first inhabitants to the tortoise-pen. Their body-weight was 192 and 301 gram. At 8.45 a.m. we had brought all tortoises to this pen: there are now 23 inhabitants (and some can be released when the weather has improved) > 2 Marginated Tortoises, 1 Greek Tortoise and 20 Spurr-tighed Tortoises. We ordered iron for the construction of new cages/pens > all together more than 200 meter !! We could clean-up the wing of the Buzzard a bit > assistance was given by Jessica. At 6.22 p.m. a phone-call from the Agrotikí Stégi in Kalloní that an injured bird was delivered over there > so in the pitch-dark we went to there and picked-up the bird. Was a shot PEREGRINE > see further over there.

February 14th:  the new Peregrine was still alive this morning, was quite a lot more active but had diminished with 19 gram. The little Marginated Tortoise was 66 gram and the Buzzard was 842 gram. At 6.40 a.m. we had to take back from the Barn Owl-cage in “The Keep” the White Barn Owl > again the same story as the previous time !! Is he chased by the other ones into the water ?? For the time being keep him separated till a release can happen in March. We could remove the agrafes from the wing-amputation of the Mediterranean Gull > injury looks well. Although there was agreed the ordered iron should be delivered around 11 o’clock, it arrived after lots of phone-calls after one o’clock: 265,5 kilo iron profile & strips for a total amount of 218,81 Euro !! One Dutch visitor.

February 15th:  the little Marginated Tortoise had probably relieved well because he/she had diminished with 2 gram !! The Buzzard was 862 gram and Peregrine III had gained well and was now 556 gram. Is standing straight upright now !! The splint is changed today and the injury is smelling well. There is an immense hemorrhage in the right ear. We clipped the big feathers from the injured wing of the shot Pigeon from Íppio and he is transferred to the pigeon-cage in “The Keep”. The injuries on the wing of the Buzzard are doing well and they are drying slowly > now it’s more possible that the bird was electrocuted in stead of shot, but the distance between the electricity-cables is really too long to make this possible !! For the new pen for the Marginated Tortoises we measured & cut the profiles for the base and they were painted twice with anti-rust paint. The pen will measure 0,7 x 3,5 meter. Late in the afternoon the Buzzard was sitting on the given roost.

February 16th:  the little Marginated Tortoise was 65 gram, the Buzzard 875 gram and Peregrine III  593 gram. By our eldest doggie, the in 1994 born “Prótos”, we have under a total anesthetic clipped nails and removed scale. As well two rotten back-teeth were removed. Both trainees Hilda & Jessica assisted. Not in the statistics. Later this morning the 8 standers for the tortoise-pen were cut and made fitting, whereafter Hilda could show her artistic talents, using grey paint to make something beautiful out of it. And Jessica could throw her weight into the scale by forcing a difficult piece of iron to bend. The two lowest corner-standers are fixed already provisionally. At 1.05 p.m. we received a phone-call from Pétra from Melanie & Jeroen  about one of their cats which was poisoned > as good as possible advices were given. At 6 p.m. we received the message that the little cat was OK !!

February 17th:  the little Marginated Tortoise was back again at 66 gram, the Buzzard had gained weight with 21 gram and was now 896 gram, and Peregrine III had eaten 26 gram and was 619 gram. The last two patients can’t be caught anymore without gloves; they are too “sharp” now !! There is blowing such a cold north wind, that it should have been pure masochism to continue building of the new tortoise-pen on the roof of “The Keep” now !! And of course we were disturbed in our sleep (in the siesta) by a phone-call from Pétra about a doggie with a broken leg > the phone-number of the “Animal-Lovers-Society of Lesvos” was given.

February 18th:  the Buzzard had diminished with 8 gram and was 888 gram; Peregrine III was 630 gram. Changing the splint/bandage of the last mentioned bird, we smelled a suspicious gangrene-smell > so no good omen !! Due to ice-cold rain we had to leave the roof of “The Keep”, but not after we first (provisionally) had fastened the remaining 6 standers of the new tortoise-pen. We did an excursion with both trainees to the early-Christian Basilica and hereafter an “ecological visit” was made to the local rubbish-dump, where dead horses, cows, sheep and goats could be “admired” . . . .  Hereafter the pregnant Násja came with her husband to be who had two puppies which should have their first vaccination > given. As well an appointment was made for February 22nd to remove under an anesthetic the 2nd thumb of one rear-leg of the smaller of the two. After 5 o’clock the woman from Káto Trítos, who had brought January 26th the shot Yellow-legged Gull and the ditto Pigeon, came to look how “her” birds were doing > now there was time for a complete conducted tour. She offered assistance as well . . . .

February 19th:  the Buzzard was in the plus again and was 900 gram; Peregrine III was 655 gram. Today was the weekly “meat-cutting-day” again and united 16,5 kilo beef, minced-meat & liver (total amount 79,46 Euro) was processed. Till now on this year 105,160 kilo for 617,13 Euro. And while in the kitchen 4 people were doing so, others faced the “inclement weather-conditions” by painting grey endless pieces of iron and hereafter “process” those into the beginning of the new pen for the Marginated Tortoises. Peregrine III has recuperated so much, that he is climbing quietly on the hand and in this way is transported to his feeding place!! About the right eye and the ditto wing we still can’t say anything sane. Both trainees have tried to understand the “amusements” of the Greek Carnival . . . .  At 4.35 p.m. a phone-call from Skála Polichnítos that one will pass-by the 21st  with a cat, having diarrhoea.

February 20th:  the Buzzard had gained 7 gram, but Peregrine III was 25 gram less. With both trainees the planned “cultural excursion” was done: seen were the remainings of the Roman Aqueduct in Lámbou Míli and visited the huge remainings in Mória. A “border-overstepped” visit was made to the Castle of Mytiléne, whereafter first a tribute was made to the pre-christian Holy Oak in Pírgi Thermís and hereafter the foundations of the Greek Thermal Baths in Paralía Thermís and the Roman Bath next to it. By way of a sandy road across the island the main road was reached and after a consumption in Lámbou Míli back to base, where of course the arrears of work still had to be done. At 6.10 p.m. someone from Mytiléne was knocking at the door with a severe sick juvenile WHITE PEACOCK > see further over there.

February 21st:  the little Marginated Tortoise was 67 gram, the Buzzard 928 gram, but Peregrine II had diminished again with 6 gram and was now 624 gram. The White Peacock is simmering like a steam-engine, but is evidently still alive. Peregrine II (06-233; November 15th ’06) is transferred to the Falcon-aviary for day & night now. The Buzzard (07-016; February 7th ’07) received a foot-ring and was transferred to the Buzzard-aviary for flying-practice. Under a light total-anesthetic we could remove scale and one waggling eye-tooth was removed. Not in the statistics.

Releases:

In the Salines were released (as invalids) the shot Yellow-legged Gull (07-010; January 26th) and the as well shot Mediterranean Gull (07-015; February 7th).

At 10.47 a.m. the announced Tom-cat from Skála Polichnítos arrived > see further by TOM-CAT. And at 11.45 a.m. the skeleton of the pen fro the Marginated Tortoises was ready. Thereafter 2 visitors from Mytiléne (from the Dasarcheío) who amongst others wanted to see how the fox was doing. As well they took with them the signatures we gathered  for a refuge in and around the Salines. And as well came a lovely old lady from the village here, who (a bit “simple” like she is) started to kiss everyone, but who wanted to have advices about kittens > Ineke has taken care of her.

February 22nd:  Peregrine III hadn’t diminished anymore and was still 624 gram. The White Peacock is simmering evidently less than she did at intake. The wing-injury of Peregrine III has no gangrene-smell anymore; this due to the treatment with Dermisol-solvens ?? Both trainees could use their creativity again by painting grey tens and tens of meters of iron strip. Hereafter started with the netting of the pen for the Marginated Tortoises > at 11.35 the first part was done. At 12.45 o’clock our village-fellow Mílto came with his sweet little doggie > a crossbreed Pitbull. With his too long tail the dog had reckoned a door, but as well docked the top of the tail. Tried to give First Aid, but this was only successful after Jessica (with a risk for the own “private parts”) firmly tightened the dog between her legs. She left the surgery without a bandage; the dog with one . . . . !! Not in the statistics. During the last feeding-round we discovered that in the right eye of Peregrine III there is a “corpus alienum”: a piece of tissue that is in the first eye-chamber. The pupil isn’t reacting upon light, so the eye is definitively “gone”. Even with a 100% good wing this bird could never be released anymore. At 6.47 p.m. a phone-call from Mólivos about a knocked-down stray doggie > one will pass by. And at 7.55 p.m. the poor soul was here > see further by BITCH.

February 23rd:  the little Marginated Tortoise was 71 gram and Peregrine III was 642 gram. We were able to perform with success a huge surgery on the blind cat, “Mispoes”, from the House-next-door > see further by her name. Hereafter we could only do a little bit in the new pen for the Tortoises. At 1.05 p.m. one was back with the Tom-cat (see February 21st) from Skála Polichnítos: the poor soul refused to eat and was quite uncertain on its legs. Probably he is allowed to pass away quietly . . . . !!

February 24th:  the little Marginated Tortoise was 75 gram and Peregrine III was 665 gram. “Mispoes” was ok after the first 24 hours and is producing, in spite of we didn’t touch the vocal cords, evidently less noise. Under a light anesthetic (touching her ears, she is biting !) we could clean the ears of the little bitch “Mítsi” (06-223; October 25th ’06), clip the nails of her front-paws and empty the anal glands (Not in the statistics). We removed the splint by Peregrine III: it looks like if a part of the wing has a dry gangrene and will drop-off in the near future. Because due to stormy weather we definitively couldn’t work on the roof of “The Keep”, we started with arranging (buying etc.) of materials for the replacement of the “pre-christian” electricity-system in the House-next-door. A phone-call came from Skála Polichnítos that they will pass-by today with the Tom-cat for euthanizing.  And they were here at 1.45 p.m. > we fulfilled the rightly wish.

February 25th:  the Marginated Tortoise was 77 gram and Peregrine III (after removal of the splint) 647 gram. And while we, forced by the cold weather, were busy with the electricity in the House-next-door, suddenly there were 2 men from Skála Kallonís in front of the door with an injured gull > see further by YELLOW-LEGGED GULL. We have heard that the knocked-down doggie from Mólivos isn’t doing well yet: is hardly able standing on the legs and is sagging after 3 steps.

February 26th:  the Yellow-legged Gull was still alive this morning and so we started with antibiotics: yesterday it still was the question if this should have sense at all !! We received the message from Holland that the measurements are those of a female. Peregrine III was 655 gram. Today we have heard for the first time the natural sound of the White Peacock > so a good omen. And the Yellow-legged Gull as well is starting to become more vivid. While we took profit of the good weather (we even could have a coffee together outside in the sun!) and continued working on the roof of “The Keep”, there was a meat-processing in the kitchen by Douglas & Janice, Jessica, Hilda & Ineke: today 15,605 kilo for 89,23 Euro. Till now on this year 120,765 kilo for 706,36 Euro. At 3.50 p.m. 3 sides of the pen for the Marginated Tortoises were netted; tomorrow 2 cubic meters of sand will be delivered, so for the time being we can continue. During the last feeding-round we have discovered that the Yellow-legged Gull was shot after all: shot-hole quite low in the throat (front-side). This declares as well the difficult swallowing of food.

February 27th:  Peregrine III had diminished till 644 gram. At 10.45 a.m. the pen for the Marginated Tortoises had all its netting and received as well 2 extra supports. Due to a coming rain-fall the painting was delayed till a later time. Meanwhile the 2 trainees had “bred muscles” by removing one from the brought 2 cubic meters of sand, so traffic should be possible again. The already mentioned the 21st, a bit simple old lady was at our door at 1 p.m. with a poisoned Tom-cat  > she herself had already tried to neutralize the poison with . . . . olive-oil . . . . !! See further by TOM-CAT. Did we write already the 24th about the probably dry gangrene of Peregrine III, today we noticed that this is indeed the case. At 4.55 p.m. the White Peacock was taken back by her owner > see over there. At 5.50 p.m. a phone-call from our 1st–Aid station in Thessalonica about a pigeon with a broken (??) wing > will be send by the first Ferry.

February 28th:  we wanted to release the White barn Owl (06-203; October 6th ’06) by placing him first in the deserted house, being able to feed him (if necessary) for the first couple of days, but he didn’t agree with that.

Release:  the mentioned above White Barn Owl saw & smelled freedom and flew at once (and well) through the open window outside, in spite of being clear day-light.

Because again we couldn’t paint due to the weather, we went for a ride and looked on the “deserted beach” (cross-road to Achladerí) for old trunks for the (still to be constructed) peregrine-cage. Hereafter we started in the House-next-door constructing a separation-wall in the hall of the ground-floor. The owner of the poisoned Tom-cat came and had to hear that her most-beloved wasn’t alive anymore > she was quite emotional !! And because in the siesta the sun started to shine, we could after 3.30 p.m. quickly give the last layer of paint to the new constructed cage.

Total amount of visitors this month:  008                      (total this year: 073)

Kinds of animals who are mentioned like this were for the first time in treatment in the L.W.H.

Amount of kilometers (Animal-Ambulance) for bringing-in/releasing animals this month 115 (total this year 0150 kilometers)

Total amount of intakes this month: 10 [wild ones: 04; others 06], (total this year 023 > : wild ones 009, others 014; total since the start of registration in 1996: 3566),  of which:

PUPPY (Canis familiaris): 1 bitch from our village; was hit by a car. The local “congregation” wanted already to kill the poor soul, but our Secretary María Karapolíti took pity on her and brought her here. Most probably the little one has internal bleedings (was urinating blood) so we injected 1 ampoule of Konakion. More we couldn’t do. So it’s wait and see. (see as well February 3rd)

MEDITERRANEAN GULL (Larus melanocephalus): 1 from Mólivos > severe open complicated fracture of the right Humerus (already days & days old) with multiple torsions. So the wing couldn’t be saved > amputation.

(see as well February 21st ).

BUZZARD (Buteo buteo): 1 (probably) male from Pérama > at the first look the right wing is shot into barrels. For the time being started with a hanging cast.

PEREGRINE (Falco peregrinus brookei): 1 sub-adult male from somewhere in the fields around Kalloní > was “shot to atoms”. Right wing open, splintered fracture of radius & ulna, shot-pellet(s) in the head through which the right eye is “gone”. Wing splinted & stitched; antibiotics were injected. Let’s hope he’ll make it, but he’ll remain here. Was discovered at 9.25 p.m. laying on his back with the head turned strangely > so is severe hit in the brain. Was laying normally and breathing quietly at 10.50 p.m.

WHITE PEACOCK (Pavo cristata alba): 1 juvenile hen from Mytiléne; in the past the owner had brought over here more ones of the same kind, which we were able to treat with some success. In this case there was already hawked about this one by several Vets till the bird was about “stuffed” with antibiotics, and now we are on the row to try to cure this severe pulmonal sick animal. We have hardly much hope, but we’re going to give it a try. And the 27th the bird went back to the grateful owner completely cured.

TOM-CAT (Felis catus): 2; the first was a (former) stray from Skála Polichnítos > severe skin-problems and diarrhoea. As well feeding-advices as medicines were given. Will be treated further at home. (see as well February 23rd ). The 2nd came from our village and was poisoned. The old, a bit simple owner had already tried to do something with olive-oil > the poor cat was dripping !! Over here Atropine and Apomorfine were injected and the cat was taken-in for observation (& saving from another time olive-oil !!). However, we don’t have a lot of confidence. At 4 p.m. the pupils were already complete light-stiff, so we “helped a bit” by euthanizing.

BITCH (Canis familiaris): 1 quite young specimen from Mólivos > is fed by the children of the primary school over there. Knocked-down in the traffic: clean wound right rear-leg and contusion of the left rear-leg. Injury was stitched. The “discoverers” will take care at home of the doggie the coming days.

MISPOES (Felis catus): came in as a blind, pregnant cat in 2003 (02-018; February 4th) with a.o. epileptic insults. Till now on we really had the opinion that the risk of a surgery was too big, but her behavior (all days in heat with in proportion the nuisance of her sounds) did us decide to perform the surgery now. A huge uterus full of cysts was removed.

YELLOW-LEGGED GULL (Larus cachinnans michael.): 1 in 2nd-winter-dress > open fracture left wing close to the pulse > splinted. Is probably knocked-down. For a member of this species he/she is properly speaking too friendly.
