Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 292 (+5), green was 318 (-2), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 359 (+1) and the taken-back one was 418 (+7) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 436 (-3) and the Sparrowhawk was 270 (-3) gram. The latter is loosing quite a lot of fluid from the injured wing. Tortoises: number A was 168 (+6), number I was 74 (+4), III was 120 (+5), IV was 118 (+3) and V was 90 (-2) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 50 (+1), nr. 2 was 49 (+1), nr. 3 was 43 (=), nr. 4 was 44 (-4), nr. 5 was 43 (+1), number 6 was 22 (+1) and number 7 was 20 (+2) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten extraordinary well last night. At 7.50 a.m. the outdoor Tom-Cat Vriendje (= Buddy) came asking to be fed > expressly we had given him only a little bit early this morning. . . . !! So see further at TOM CAT. In the House-next-door was continued with sorting out and clearing away, something what (except from more space) had a nice blaze as result. We could finish the 4 holed clothes for castrations and packed them separately for sterilization. Vriendje was at 3 p.m. present again in our courtyard to eat. December 2nd: the Kestrel was 187 (=) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 288 (-4), green was 325 (+7), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 358 (-1) and the taken-back one was 419 (+1) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 435 (-1) and the Sparrowhawk was 264 (-6) gram. Tortoises: number A was 163 (-5), number I was 70 (-4), III was 115 (-5), IV was 119 (+1) and V was 94 (+4) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 51 (+1), nr. 2 was 44 (-5), nr. 3 was 46 (+3), nr. 4 was 43 (-1), nr. 5 was 42 (-1), number 6 was 21 (-1) and number 7 was 20 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten quite well last night. The whole of Greece has an orange weather-alert due to expected thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and strong winds; in our region it can be 8 Beaufort !! In the House-next-door a lot of space is created now, so we can start building scaffoldings for storing everything kind with kind. Over here a holed cloth (big opening) is made and a small sterile cloth. During rainfall there was a complete black-out for the whole island at 7.10 p.m., which lasted until 8.34 p.m. It was a bit managing with candles, but after all nice and cosy !! When electricity returned, one of the inhabitants in the House-next-door thought this was not the case over there > but to have light of course a switch must be turned first !! December 3rd: the Kestrel was 190 (+3) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 286 (-2), green was 330 (+5), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 354 (-4) and the taken-back one was 419 (=) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 425 (-10, and she is well on scheme now) and the Sparrowhawk was 268 (+4) gram. The wing of the latter is almost dry now and the hanging cast is removed. Tortoises: number A was 171 (+8), number I was 72 (+2), III was 116 (+1), IV was 118 (-1) and V was 97 (+3) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 49 (-2), nr. 2 was 47 (+3), nr. 3 was 44 (-2), nr. 4 was 48 (+5), nr. 5 was 43 (+1), number 6 was 21 (=) and number 7 was 20 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten very well in spite of the bad weather. We started carefully giving the Sparrowhawk food and water in her cage. In the storage-room of the House-next-door (will be the Workshop in the future) we started already with the further construction of scaffoldings. Forced to stop by back-pain (its a bit low over there), we could finish the last two clothes: another holed cloth (big opening) and a small sterile cloth. The attention of Joren could inform us that the (ex-) juvenile Hooded Crow (09-129; July 14th 09) had lost a claw-nail and was bleeding severely > with acrobatic movements the bird was caught and the bleeding was coagulated. Further not in the statistics. And after almost 23 hours of sulking staying away, Vriendje was towards 2 p.m. present again for a meal. Injuries are looking fine. December 4th: the Kestrel was 196 (+6) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 293 (+7), green was 334 (+4), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 361 (+7) and the taken-back one was 421 (=) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 422 (-3) and the Sparrowhawk was 263 (-5) gram. Tortoises: number A was 169 (-2), number I was 68 (-4), III was 124 (+8), IV was 118 (=) and V was 97 (=) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 52 (+3), nr. 2 was 51 (+4), nr. 3 was 48 (+4), nr. 4 was 46 (-2), nr. 5 was 45 (+2), number 6 was 22 (+1) and number 7 was 21 (+1) gram. The Hedgehogs hadnt eaten at all. In the pigeon-cage in The Keep again a dead juvenile Pigeon (hatched over there) was discovered. During the morning-hours we could finish the skeleton of the scaffolding, we started with yesterday. Tomorrow the shelves and thereafter we can start storing materials over there. At 7.07 p.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne about a Pigeon with a broken wing > will be sent (if still alive) with the 1.15 p.m.-coach tomorrow. December 5th: the Kestrel was 192 (-4) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 297 (+4), green was 332 (-2), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 363 (+2) and the taken-back one was 424 (+3) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 424 (+2) and the Sparrowhawk was 268 (+5) gram. Tortoises: number A was 167 (-2), number I was 73 (+5), III was 114 (-10), IV was 119 (+1) and V was 97 (=) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 52 (=), nr. 2 was 49 (-2), nr. 3 was 44 (-4), nr. 4 was 45 (-1), nr. 5 was 45 (=), number 6 was 22 (=) and number 7 was 21 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs only had eaten some of the offered pears. At 9.05 a.m. a phone-call from someone who yesterday, while taking care of his horse somewhere in a field, had discovered an injured bird. Was something very special and such a bird he never had seen before. He thought it could be a Búfos (Eagle Owl), but most probably it will be a Barn Owl. Bird will be brought. And they were here at 10.14 a.m. > see further (indeed !!) at PALE BARN OWL. The bearers, a family from Keramiá, were shown a.o. a real Eagle Owl. After the intake of this Barn Owl we could continue for a while with the scaffolding were building, till we had to stop at 11.45 due to a lack of materials. The announced Pigeon we had in our possession at 1.50 p.m. > see further at PIGEON. At 4.34 p.m. we discovered in the pigeon-cage in The Keep a juvenile white Pigeon, which was sitting quite bulging. Taken with us and taken-in. So see over here as well at PIGEON. December 6th: all patients were still alive in the Sick-Bay at 5 a.m. !! The Kestrel was 189 (-3) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 301 (+4), green was 337 (+5), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 353 (-10), the taken-back one was 432 (+8) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 252 (+12) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 412 (-12) and the Sparrowhawk was 269 (+1) gram. Tortoises: number A was 169 (+2), number I was 74 (+1), III was 115 (+1), IV was 120 (+1) and V was 95 (-2) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 53 (+1), nr. 2 was 48 (-1), nr. 3 was 49 (+5), nr. 4 was 46 (+1), nr. 5 was 44 (-1), number 6 was 22 (=) and number 7 was 22 (+1) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten well last night. We have opened carefully the ganglion in the elbow of the yesterday taken-in Pigeon from Mytiléne: a huge piece of cheese could be removed and after some pressure a lot thinner pus. So the prognosis is improving now !! Since we a day or so ago started with force-feeding of the injured Spurr-tighed Tortoise
and thereafter pointing the injuries with Dermisol-cream, we have a somewhat better sight on the injuries now: the muscles below the skin are quite nice pink, and so its only the skin which is affected. This is diminishing the chance of dieing-off of the whole leg !! In spite of a shortage of fitting materials, we could continue with the building of scaffoldings in the workshop to be, and this even after 5 p.m. !! At 6.13 p.m. our friend Martin from Skála Polichnítos was at our door with in his hands a Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), which he had found still alive (but somewhat moribund) trampling besides the road just outside Skála Kallonís > at arrival over here she was dead already. From what we could see in a glimpse it could have been as well a traffic- or a hunting-victim, and maybe as well a combination of both. Tomorrow a P.M. will be performed, but will not appear in the statistics. December 7th: all patients were still alive early this morning. The Kestrel was 190 (+1) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 290 (-11), green was 334 (-3), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 357 (+4), the taken-back one was 433 (+1) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 291 (+39) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 416 (+4) and the Sparrowhawk was 270 (+1) gram. Tortoises: number A was 162 (-7), number I was 68 (-6), III was 117 (+2), IV was 119 (-1) and V was 97 (+2) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 52 (-1), nr. 2 was 49 (+1), nr. 3 was 47 (-2), nr. 4 was 49 (+3), nr. 5 was 45 (+1), number 6 was 23 (+1) and number 7 was 22 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten reasonably. The last part of the skeleton of the scaffolding was finished this morning, whereafter lots of concrete on the floor (where in the past those Alibaba-jugs had been placed) could be chopped away. Tomorrow the floor can be repaired and flattened. Meanwhile Joren & Ineke, Douglas & Janice, assisted by Maria for the last time this year, had processed meat: 21,090 kilo for 130,61 Euro (total now this year 844,398 kilo for 5192,21 Euro). We have opened the Mallard and checked: no shot-holes could be detected. The bird was as plump as a partridge and had some small discolorations in top of both lungs > most probably from inhaled blood. So is 100% sure a road-kill. The Dog-Fox will take care of the mortal remains. As far as we can see now the wing of the Sparrowhawk seems partly being died-off > this quite under the place of the fracture and to be exact beginning from the elbow. December 8th: at 6 a.m. the juvenile white Pigeon was discovered not alive anymore. The Kestrel was 188 (-2) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 294 (+4), green was 331 (-3), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 357 (=), the taken-back one was 435 (+2) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 313 (+22) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 415 (-1) and the Sparrowhawk was 272 (+2) gram. Tortoises: number A was 168 (+6), number I was 74 (+6), III was 116 (-1), IV was 119 (=) and V was 101 (+4) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 53 (+1), nr. 2 was 52 (+3), nr. 3 was 51 (+4), nr. 4 was 51 (+2), nr. 5 was 46 (+1), number 6 was 23 (=) and number 7 was 22 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs hadnt eaten at all. Maria left for Holland at 6.35 a.m. after having learned quite a lot about herself. In the fox-cage is only the head of the Mallard still present !! We have checked the wing-injuries of the new Pale Barn Owl: is well dry and is smelling good. Has only yet a double hanging cast and further no splint anymore. The wing of the Sparrowhawk is indeed partly dead > we first will wait and see when the dead part is falling off. In the House-next-door at 10 oclock the holes in the floor of the workshop were filled and flattened, a hole close to the door of the Apothíki was filled, a mouse-hole in the crow-aviary was closed and the same happened with 3 mouse-holes in the Aviary. The JorJor-scaffolding was finished at 1.15 p.m. and partly filled. At 4.30 p.m. was removed from the pigeon-cage in The Keep a born over there juvenile Pigeon with Rhinotracheitis > so see further at PIGEON. December 9th: no victims early this morning. The Kestrel was 185 (-3) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 292 (-2), green was 332 (+1), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 358 (+1), the taken-back one was 437 (+2) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 324 (+11) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 412 (-3) and the Sparrowhawk was 266 (-6) gram. Tortoises: number A was 161 (-7), number I was 75 (+1), III was 121 (+5), IV was 122 (+3) and V was 96 (-5) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 55 (+2), nr. 2 was 53 (+1), nr. 3 was 49 (-2), nr. 4 was 49 (-2), nr. 5 was 47 (+1), number 6 was 23 (=) and number 7 was 22 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs again hadnt eaten at all. We have given the Pigeon with the ganglion on the elbow colored foot-rings as a preparation for a transfer to the pigeon-cage in The Keep. We started building a work-bench in the workshop; as a base an old pallet is used while the top-covering came from the building-up of that pallet-crate. At 10.55 a.m. a phone-call from the Shelter in Skála Eressoú about the cat Máska, which has a huge tumor on the head. In the past the cat had suffered from an ear-tumor, which was removed. Theyre going to try to catch the cat and will show-up over here for an opinion if it still will make sense removing the tumor, or that it will be end of exercise. The work-bench mentioned above was finished at 12.50 p.m. December 10th: all patients were still alive early this morning. The Kestrel was 189 (+4) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 294 (+2), green was 327 (-5), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 352 (-5), the taken-back one was 439 (+2) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 343 (+19) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 411 (-1) and the Sparrowhawk was 250 (-16) gram. Tortoises: number A was 163 (+2), number I was 76 (+1), III was 117 (-4), IV was 123 (+1) and V was 99 (+3) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 55 (=), nr. 2 was 52 (-1), nr. 3 was 47 (-2), nr. 4 was 47 (-2), nr. 5 was 47 (=), number 6 was 22 (-1) and number 7 was 22 (=) gram. Due to the bad weather the Hedgehogs hadnt left their houslet and so there wasnt eaten. At 7.55 a.m. the Pigeon with the ganglion in the wing (09-217; December 4th 09) was transferred to the pigeon-cage in The Keep. We could continue with the organization of the work-shop; doing so it showed to be we have quite a lot of water in there, which is coming through the wall from outside > so next year (when its more dry) we should arrange something is done here against. During the 11-oclock-feedinground it showed it was necessary to amputate the wing of the Sparrowhawk now: was before the surgery 250 gram; thereafter 129 (-11) gram. And while we still were busy cleaning the mess, the former inhabitant of the House-next-door, Panagiótis, was in our courtyard with his severe injured Pekinese in his arms > so see further at PEKINESE. Ever since 1.26 p.m. the whole of Northern Greece, but as well the Northeastern Aegean Islands (and so thats us) has a red weather-alert due to storms and thunderstorms !! December 11th: the red weather-alert was turned back till orange at 3.50 a.m. In the Sick-Bay all were still alive early this morning. The Kestrel was 187 (-2) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 294 (=), green was 325 (-2), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 357 (+5), the taken-back one was 443 (+4) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 338 (-5) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 410 (-1) and the Sparrowhawk was 223 (-16) gram. Tortoises: number A was 158 (-5), number I was 73 (-3), III was 117 (=), IV was 122 (-1) and V was 102 (+3) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 57 (+2), nr. 2 was 53 (+1), nr. 3 was 47 (=), nr. 4 was 50 (+3), nr. 5 was 47 (=), number 6 was 24 (+2) and number 7 was 21 (-1) gram. Of course the Hedgehogs hadnt eaten last night. We could remove the double hanging cast from the wings of the new Pale Barn Owl: the position is well and is grown good together. Migrant centerLesvos to get model unit Senior officials of the Defense and Citizens Protection ministries yesterday heralded the creation and operation of a model reception center for undocumented migrants on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos in 2010. The plan is that the center, which is being funded by the European Union, would be a temporary stop-off point for migrants who would stay there just a few days. Those meriting asylum would then be forwarded to hostels until their applications are processed, minors would be sent to special facilities and the remainder of the migrants would be deported. According to sources, there are plans for a similar center to open in Ritsona on the island of Evia. December 12th: no victims this morning. The Kestrel was 187 (=) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 294 (=), green was 329 (+4), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 357 (=), the taken-back one was 442 (-1) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 327 (-11) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 408 (-2) and the Sparrowhawk was 210 (-13) gram. The latter was fed the past days time after time more difficult and started vomiting this morning the given food > does she dont believe in it anymore ?? Tortoises: number A was 165 (+7), number I was 72 (-1), III was 120 (+3), IV was 124 (+2) and V was 101 (-1) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 56 (-1), nr. 2 was 51 (-2), nr. 3 was 51 (+4), nr. 4 was 49 (-1), nr. 5 was 46 (-1), number 6 was 24 (=) and number 7 was 21 (=) gram. In any case there was eaten somewhat by the Hedgehogs. And while we were busy with the weekly cleaning of cages and aviaries (one day earlier due to expected very important visitors), we were watched by Pinky who acted as an honorary tortoise-guard . . . .
In the aviary of the Little Owls In The Keep a piece of netting next to the water-bowl showed to be so rotten, that holes had appeared > with a piece of plastified aviary-netting it was repaired. DEADLY WRECKImmigrant drowns off LesvosCoast guard officials on Lesvos yesterday recovered the body of a drowned immigrant and rescued another 26 migrants after the fishing boat in which they had been trying to reach the Aegean island from neighboring Turkey foundered amid choppy waters. A coast guard vessel was yesterday scouring the area where the boat sank for signs of another female migrant who is believed to be missing. At 3.15 p.m. there were two men at our door with, crumpled in a small shit-cage, a SPARROW-HAWK > so see over there. Sparrowhawk nr 1 (09-210; November 22nd 09) was, what was expected, discovered not alive anymore at 7.15 p.m. December 13th: no further victims last night !! The Kestrel was 187 (=) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 291 (-3), green was 323 (-6), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 356 (-1), the taken-back one was 440 (-2) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 331 (+4) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 410 (+2) and the new Sparrowhawk was 230 (-1) gram. Tortoises: number A was 168 (+3), number I was 73 (+1), III was 119 (-1), IV was 120 (-4) and V was 100 (-1) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 57 (+1), nr. 2 was 52 (+1), nr. 3 was 49 (-2), nr. 4 was 49 (=), nr. 5 was 46 (=), number 6 was 23 (-1) and number 7 was 22 (+1) gram. Due to the rainfall there wasnt eaten by the Hedgehogs. Too due to the used Pyralvex we could remove from the mouth of the new Sparrowhawk from both sides quite a lot of dirt. We could guide around VIPs today: Jorens mother and his girlfriend. At 9.43 a.m. a phone-call from Pétra that in Ánaxos still was walking around a big tortoise > will be sent by coach. Removing the stitches from the wing-injury of the new Pale Barn Owl a lot of cheese appeared > again Dermisol-cream was used and a double hanging cast was given again. The outdoor Tom-Cat Earl Grey was seen at 1.45 p.m. with quite a swollen head, covered with blood > what exactly was the reason, we dont know !! We have received the message that the Tortoise will be sent the day after tomorrow with the first coach coming from Mólivos. At 4.15 p.m. the taken-back Dark Barn Owl (09-185; October 7th 09) was transferred to the Barn Owl-cage in The Keep. December 14th: all patients were still alive early this morning. The Kestrel was 188 (+1) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 289 (-2), green was 314 (-9), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 349 (-7) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 337 (+6) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 404 (-6) and the Sparrowhawk was 238 (+8) gram. Tortoises: number A was 169 (+1), number I was 72 (-1), III was 116 (-3), IV was 119 (-1) and V was 104 (+4) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 56 (-1), nr. 2 was 53 (+1), nr. 3 was 49 (=), nr. 4 was 49 (=), nr. 5 was 49 (+3), number 6 was 24 (+1) and number 7 was 22 (=) gram. Again the Hedgehogs hadnt eaten. The yesterday transferred Dark Barn Owl was seen early this morning high above in a nest-box. We have removed the double hanging cast from the Sparrowhawk and again we could remove a lot of dirt out of her mouth. Its starting becoming clean over there. Today was meat-cutting-day again and Douglas (who has his birthday today) with Janice, Ineke with Joren, and in any case with the spiritual relief of Jorens mother Liesbeth and his girlfriend Birgitta, have processed 19,625 kilo (for 127,65 Euro; total now this year 864,023 kilo for 5319,86 Euro). At the other side was continued with the closure of creep-through, sneak-through-holes from mice in our Apothíki. We used aluminium profiles herefor. This was ready, after quite difficult bending in between wine-bottles and so on, at 11.25 a.m. Hereafter we had to give back the double hanging cast to the Sparrowhawk, because the wing was hanging in such a way she was stepping hereon !! At 1.08 p.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne about a Collared Dove, which isnt injured and should be further fine as well, but which isnt able to fly > will be sent by coach tomorrow. Meanwhile we were busy giving our guests a cultural excursion (after the meat-cutting from earlier this morning) and we were on our way to the Early Christian Basilica, when almost at the same spot as where yesterday the car succumbed and we had needed the help of our garagist to come home again, the left rear-tire complete was in pieces . . . . Saint Charálambos doesnt seem to be good minded towards us. Luckily the garagist has such a tire in stock, so we can be completed again tomorrow. After 5 p.m. we heard from Jeroen in Pétra, that the tortoise (he is sending early tomorrow by coach) seems to be a Spurr-tighed Tortoise and that its quite a big one. December 15th: the Kestrel was 187 (-1) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 290 (+1), green was 324 (+10), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 354 (+5) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 338 (+1) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 407 (+3) and the Sparrowhawk was 242 (+4) gram. Tortoises: number A was 159 (-10), number I was 74 (+2), III was 120 (+4), IV was 126 (+7) and V was 103 (-1) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 56 (=), nr. 2 was 53 (=), nr. 3 was 51 (+2), nr. 4 was 55 (+6), nr. 5 was 47 (-2), nr. 6 was 24 (=) and nr. 7 was 22 (=) gram. At last the Hedgehogs had eaten again. And because the coach was quite late, we only had the tortoise in our position at 8.07 a.m. > see further at SPURR-TIGHED TORTOISE. Discovered was that in the right rear-leg of the Spurr-tighed Tortoise (09-194; October 24th 09), where at intake as well was a minor injury, now a huge hole has appeared with a cut thereunder where as well dirt was coming from > those holes are as well pointed with Dermisol-cream. The announced Collared Dove we had in our position at 11.48 a.m. > so see further at . . . . PIGEON. December 16th: the whole night it has lightened, thundered and poured with rain and we have quite a huge waterlogging in and around the House-next-door: a.o. the whole court-yard is flooded !! In the Sick-Bay all were still alive, and we dont bring some disabled birds in the open today !! The Kestrel was 186 (-1) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 284 (-6), green was 321 (-3), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 353 (-1) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 350 (+12) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 406 (-1) and the Sparrowhawk was 247 (+5) gram. Tortoises: number A was 166 (+7), number I was 78 (+4), III was 120 (=), IV was 126 (=) and V was 106 (+3) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 58 (+2), nr. 2 was 57 (+4), nr. 3 was 50 (-1), nr. 4 was 54 (-1), nr. 5 was 49 (+2), nr. 6 was 23 (-1) and nr. 7 was 22 (=) gram. In the cage of the Hedgehogs we couldnt see if there was eaten, so spoiled was everything by the rain !! Is has been such a bad weather (and till now on [8.45 a.m.] it still is), that we had to take back-in the Hobby and the red Kestrel because they were sitting in their aviary like a couple of drowned ones. The flooding in the courtyard of the House-next-door is solved > some rubbish had come in the waste-pipe. Inside the house there a lot of precautionary measures were taken to avoid further damages, but it remains an old house where not yet all windows are replaced. The floor of the workshop as well is flooded again. Towards midday it started at last being a bit more dry. In spite of that the taken-back birds remained inside the rest of the day. December 17th: no victims early this morning and its still dry !! The Kestrel was 185 (-1) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 282 (-2), green was 324 (+3), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 350 (-3) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 334 (-16, but had vomited a lot) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 404 (-2) and the Sparrowhawk was 243 (-4) gram. Tortoises: number A was 167 (+1), number I was 78 (=), III was 121 (+1), IV was 125 (-1) and V was 104 (-2) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 59 (+1), nr. 2 was 55 (-2), nr. 3 was 50 (=), nr. 4 was 56 (+2), nr. 5 was 51 (+2), nr. 6 was 22 (-1) and nr. 7 was 22 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten well from the offered cat-biscuits and the pear, but hardly from the offered Pallas-food. Before the Spurr-tighed Tortoise from Ánaxos was transferred, marked with his number on the shell, to the hibernations-place in the House-next-door, we could remove at last 8 immense ticks from his right groin. We could remove lots of dead tissue from the wing-injury of the Pale Barn Owl > were starting now with Dermisol-solvens. We have discovered that the Sparrowhawk after all most probably is shot (from a great distance) > a goggling haematomen exists on the right wing in between radius and ulna. Towards half past eleven it started raining again, which worsened later into pouring. December 18th: and again last night was very noisy with thunders and dazzling flashes with rain pouring. The Kestrel was 187 (+2) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 287 (+5), green was 333 (+9), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 349 (-1) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 342 (+8) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 405 (+1) and the Sparrowhawk was 250 (+7) gram. Tortoises: number A was 169 (+2), number I was 78 (=), III was 123 (+2), IV was 126 (+1) and V was 108 (+4) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 60 (+1), nr. 2 was 52 (-3), nr. 3 was 56 (+6), nr. 4 was 57 (+1), nr. 5 was 50 (-1), nr. 6 was 22 (=) and nr. 7 was 23 (+1) gram. The Hedgehogs had, in spite of the bad weather, eaten well. We have transferred to the pigeon-cage in The Keep the Pigeon from Mytiléne, which shouldnt be capable of flying, (09-223; December 15th 09). After the taking-back of the disabled Long-legged Buzzard Granny we had to clip and coagulate a broken talon, which was severely bleeding. At 3.50 p.m. it started thundering again, whereafter at 7.10 p.m. the hail-stones were clattering against the windows !! December 19th: luckily it was dry early this morning !! The Kestrel was 187 (=) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 292 (+5), green was 330 (-3), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 350 (+1) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 355 (+13) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 407 (+2) and the Sparrowhawk was 250 (=) gram. Tortoises: number A was 171 (+2), number I was 78 (=), III was 124 (+1), IV was 128 (+2) and V was 104 (-4) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 61 (+1), nr. 2 was 55 (+3), nr. 3 was 51 (-5), nr. 4 was 55 (-2), nr. 5 was 49 (-1), nr. 6 was 24 (+2) and nr. 7 was 23 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten sufficiently. The Spurr-tighed Tortoise had gained weight with 25 gram in 5 days !! With all present persons we went into nature (more nice than buying materials in a market-garden) to collect green for the days to come. On the road we had quite a lot of trouble with fallen rocks and debris. But indeed worse is possible: see below: Deadly rockfall closes highway
Falling rocks from the foothills of Mount Kissavos resulted in the death of an engineer and the closure for at least a month of the Athens-Thessaloniki highway in the Vale of Tempe in central Greece. Heavy rainfall had caused rocks to fall on the national road on Wednesday evening, prompting authorities to close the highway. However, when six engineers, including the 62-year-old Italian Sergio Siani, who headed the team from the Maliakos-Kleidi construction consortium, inspected the damage on Thursday morning, there was another rockfall. Siani was crushed as he sought cover behind his car and two others were injured. At 1.10 p.m. a phone-call from the vet-practice of Myrsíni Tourvalí in Mytiléne that they should send with the 1.15 p.m.-coach a Collared Dove > was discovered in the streets. Further no other information. At 1.54 p.m. an immense cardboard-box, in which easily a juvenile Pelican should have fitted, was lifted from the coach. Back at base the box was opened and quite forlorn was sitting in a corned a . . . . PIGEON > so see over there. December 20th: its storming quite a lot and the canvas emergency-roof, which was stretched by the tenant of the deserted houslet over the stable for keeping dry his 4 horses and 2 German Shepherds, was completely blown-away !! The Kestrel was 185 (-2) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 291 (-1), green was 324 (-6), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 352 (+2) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 355 (=) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 405 (-2) and the Sparrowhawk was 256 (+6) gram. Tortoises: number A was 167 (-4), number I was 80 (+2), III was 121 (-3), IV was 122 (-6) and V was 109 (+5) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 61 (=), nr. 2 was 54 (-1), nr. 3 was 56 (+5), nr. 4 was 55 (=), nr. 5 was 51 (+2), nr. 6 was 24 (=) and nr. 7 was 24 (+1) gram. The Hedgehogs hadnt eaten at all. The hot-spots inside the beak of the Sparrowhawk have disappeared now; however well continue for some days with the Pyralvex. After we had removed the double hanging cast from her wings it showed that indeed there had been a fracture of the ulna, which has fastened meanwhile. The wing is still hanging, but that should improve when she can use the wings again. After half an hour we again had to fix the shot wing with a single hanging cast !! The wing-injury of the new Pale Barn Owl is becoming cleaner; however if there will be a chance for a release is highly doubtful . . . !! The weather may be not so well in western Europe, due to which trains and flights are cancelled, Jorens visitors who should return today to those misery in the west, couldnt even do so because the flights in between the islands and Athens were cancelled due to stormy winds !! So they came back to us. Tomorrow-morning it seems to be possible from here to Athens indeed, but if there can be a landing in Holland . . . . ?? But at 7.45 p.m. we received a whole bunch of heavy weather, with spectacular flashes, roaring thunders and hailstones thrashing against the windows, so . . . . ?? December 21st: and it was actually dry at 4.30 a.m. and half an hour later the taxi arrived and the 2nd try came to reach Holland again !! The Kestrel was 187 (+2) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 297 (+6), green was 321 (-3), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 349 (-3) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 353 (-2) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 404 (-1) and the Sparrowhawk was 256 (=) gram. Tortoises: number A was 177 (+10), number I was 80 (=), III was 124 (+3), IV was 122 (=) and V was 106 (-3) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 60 (-1), nr. 2 was 58 (+4), nr. 3 was 51 (-5), nr. 4 was 55 (=), nr. 5 was 52 (+1), nr. 6 was 24 (=) and nr. 7 was 22 (-2) gram. The Hedgehogs had, in spite of the heavy weather of last night, eaten reasonably. The juvenile Collared Dove (09-166; August 31st 09), which was tumbling every time, was discovered upside-down again at 6.45 a.m., with lots of seeds under his eye-lids. During the removal of those seeds the breathing stopped suddenly at 6.55 a.m. . . . . !! The juvenile Pigeon (09-219; December 8th 09) received as preparation for the transfer-back to the pigeon-cage in The Keep double green footrings. At 9.15 a.m. a phone-call from the Shelter in Skála Eressoú about the cat with the ear-tumor (see December 9th) > seems they are coming tomorrow to bring him/her. With the same trip Ollie can go back home, because at this moment we cant do anything furthermore for him.
Today again meat-cutting-day and Douglas & Janice, Ineke & Joren have processed 19,095 kilo (for 125 Euro; total this year now 883,118 kilo for 5444,86 Euro). And so thats all for the animals. But what else there is on the menu for the days to come ?? The Wild Boar or the hunter . . . . ?? (What thy not want is passing to thou . . . .) Fatal boar huntA 52-year-old man who was part of a group of 18 people who were hunting yesterday for wild boar in the Arnaia area of Chalkidiki, northern Greece, was shot dead by another member of the party. Police said that a 49-year-old man, who seems to have shot his fellow hunter by mistake, was arrested so he could be questioned at the local police station. December 22nd: all patients were still alive early this morning. The yesterday departed for Holland-people at last both arrived on their place of destination, although for one of them it was early this morning !! The Kestrel was 183 (-4) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 294 (-3), green was 319 (-2), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 357 (+8) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 359 (+6) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 406 (+2) and the Sparrowhawk was 261 (+5) gram. Tortoises: number A was 166 (-11), number I was 78 (-2), III was 126 (+2), IV was 122 (=) and V was 112 (+6) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 62 (+2), nr. 2 was 59 (+1), nr. 3 was 52 (+1), nr. 4 was 59 (+4), nr. 5 was 50 (-2), nr. 6 was 25 (+1) and nr. 7 was 24 (+2) gram. The Hedgehogs hadnt eaten at all. We have caught the Dark Barn Owl (09-185), which was transferred to the barn-owl-cage in The Keep December 13th with 440 gram, and measured: showed havent eaten all that time and measured only 334 (-106) gram. So fed a bit and placed-back with the other Barn Owls in the Sick-Bay. The announced as Collared Dove Pigeon (see December 19th) has some problems > is tumbling to the left side. The force in the left foot is lesser and the left wing is hanging as well a bit . . . . ?? The ex-Tom Cat Máska was here at 9.15 a.m. > see further at TOM CAT. With the same transport the ex-He-dog Ollie went back to the Shelter in Skála Eressoú, awaiting his transfer to England. December 23rd: no victims this morning. The Kestrel was 187 (+4) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 293 (-1), green was 322 (+3), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 351 (-6), the taken-back Dark Barn Owl was 365 (+31) and the new pale with the wing-fracture was 361 (+2) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 409 (+3) and the Sparrowhawk was 268 (+7) gram. Tortoises: number A was 173 (+7), number I was 80 (+2), III was 127 (+1), IV was 121 (-1) and V was 106 (-6) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 64 (+2), nr. 2 was 60 (+1), nr. 3 was 54 (+2), nr. 4 was 55 (-4), nr. 5 was 52 (+2), nr. 6 was 24 (-1) and nr. 7 was 25 (+1) gram. The Hedgehogs hadnt eaten at all again. At 7.55 a.m. Máska got his injection > see further at TOM-CAT. The young Pigeon (which was announced as a Collared Dove), which was tumbling upside-down all the time, started breathing today as well more difficult > at 4.18 we have stopped the suffering. December 24th: at 5 a.m. the ex-Tom-Cat Máska showed he had had a good night; had perfectly produced droppings in the litter box. Had been eating well and the injury is perfectly dry !! The Kestrel was 189 (+2) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 292 (-1), green was 320 (-2), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 356 (+5), the taken-back Dark Barn Owl was 375 (+10) and the pale with the wing-fracture was 368 (+7) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 408 (-1) and the Sparrowhawk was 278 (+10) gram. Tortoises: number A was 168 (-5), number I was 79 (-1), III was 125 (-2), IV was 118 (-3) and V was 111 (+5) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 65 (+1), nr. 2 was 60 (=), nr. 3 was 58 (+4), nr. 4 was 59 (+4), nr. 5 was 54 (+2), nr. 6 was 26 (+2) and nr. 7 was 24 (-1) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten quite well: all cat-biscuits had completely disappeared !! We have continued with sorting out and re-organizing of as well the Work-shop as the Apothíki in the House-next-door. We could remove quite a lot of cheese from the nostrils of the Pigeon (09-219- December 8th 09) with rhinotracheitis from the pigeon-cage in The Keep; just like yesterday. The Sparrowhawk has spent this morning, without the hanging cast, several hours in the falcon-aviary > thereafter the wing was hanging lesser. The longest night and Mid-Winter was celebrated by us. The dinner for the three of us was some slices of currant-loaf (was bought) and garlic-loaf (baked by Joren himself) and some warm mulled wine; this all under candle/light. We have enjoyed this !! Neither the Boar, nor the hunter (see December 21st) could have tempted us !! December 25th: Máska is laying in his sick-cage if he has done nothing else in his whole life; even an open door cant tempt him coming out !! The Kestrel was 186 (-3) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 290 (-2), green was 318 (-2), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 350 (-6), the taken-back Dark Barn Owl was 384 (+9) and the pale with the wing-fracture was 362 (-6) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 410 (+2) and the Sparrowhawk was 267 (-11) gram. Tortoises: number A was 174 (+6), number I was 78 (-1), III was 126 (+1), IV was 116 (-2) and V was 109 (-2) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 64 (-1), nr. 2 was 61 (+1), nr. 3 was 54 (-4), nr. 4 was 59 (=), nr. 5 was 53 (-1), nr. 6 was 25 (-1) and nr. 7 was 24 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten very well: the pallas-food and the fruit was completely eaten and as well a lot of the cat-biscuits !! We could clean a small spot on the head of Máska from some pussy fluid and again cream both ears. In spite of all our unwearyingly efforts from the last weeks to get our Apothíki mouse-free, we discovered last night in the candle-store there above lots of mouse-droppings and almost the same amount of damaged candles . . . . !! After the breakfast this whole space was cleansed (4 crates of each 32 liters crammed with candles) and thereafter two mouse holes could bee seen by which those evil penetrates could enter and leave. The holes were filled with expertise by Joren with aviary-netting and thereafter flattened with plaster. The Pigeon with rhinotracheitis is starting eating and digesting more and more difficult . . . . ?? December 26th: all patients were still alive early this morning, but in the sleeping-cage of Long-legged Buzzard Granny a lot of blood was present > showed having lost last night a talon !! The Kestrel was 188 (+2) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 296 (+6), green was 321 (+3), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 349 (-1), the taken-back Dark Barn Owl was 380 (-4) and the pale with the wing-fracture was 371 (+9) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 406 (-4) and the Sparrowhawk was 270 (+3) gram. Tortoises: number A was 172 (-2), number I was 80 (+2), III was 126 (=), IV was 116 (=) and V was 108 (-1) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 63 (-1), nr. 2 was 62 (+1), nr. 3 was 57 (+3), nr. 4 was 59 (=), nr. 5 was 54 (+1), nr. 6 was 25 (=) and nr. 7 was 25 (+1) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten perfectly well: all was gone !! We have treated some hot-spots on Máska s head with Dermisol-cream to get the injury a bit more quiet. Th the House-next-door the work-computer in the hall of the 2nd floor was transferred to the room for trainees > so the cats cant demolish the whole stuff. In connection with our plans to appear beginning January 1st in another way on our sites, weve been busy almost the whole morning with designing graphics; something the drawing-up was completely Jorens idea. In between we have defrosted as well fridges and freezers. December 27th: the Pigeon (09-219; December 8th 09) with rhinotracheitis was discovered not alive anymore at 4.45 a.m. The Kestrel was 187 (-1) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 303 (+7), green was 322 (+1), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 366 (+17), the taken-back Dark Barn Owl was 380 (=) and the pale with the wing-fracture was 368 (-3) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 406 (=) and the Sparrowhawk was 278 (+8) gram. Tortoises: number A was 173 (+1), number I was 77 (-3), III was 121 (-5), IV was 112 (-4) and V was 108 (=) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 65 (+2), nr. 2 was 61 (-1), nr. 3 was 55 (-2), nr. 4 was 55 (-4), nr. 5 was 55 (+1), nr. 6 was 24 (-1) and nr. 7 was 25 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten quite well: almost everything was gone !! At 10.03 a.m. a phone-call from Athenian people, that they had with them an injured Great Egret and were searching for us > so we went to the Town-Hall to wait for them. Bird was in our possession at 10.09 a.m. > see further at Great Egret. And while we were treating this bird 3 Dutch visitors appeared: a father with two daughters. December 28th: no victims this morning at 4.45 a.m. The Kestrel was 188 (+1) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 301 (-2), green was 322 (=), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 365 (-1), the taken-back Dark Barn Owl was 384 (+4) and the pale with the wing-fracture was 367 (-1) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 403 (-3) and the Sparrowhawk was 279 (+1) gram. Tortoises: number A was 169 (-4), number I was 77 (=), III was 124 (+3), IV was 112 (=) and V was 114 (+6) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 66 (+1), nr. 2 was 63 (+2), nr. 3 was 54 (-1), nr. 4 was 59 (+4), nr. 5 was 56 (+1), nr. 6 was 26 (+2) and nr. 7 was 23 (-2) gram. The Hedgehogs again had eaten very well: only some pieces of pear were left-over !! The amputation-injury of the Great Egret has leaked hardly and is smelling well. Máska s injury is starting, thanks to the used Dermisol-cream, becoming more and more dry. At 9.45 a.m. it started thundering and pouring in such a way the Table-mount was hardly visible. Today was the last meat-cutting-day of the year and in total 18,615 kilo (for 121,63 Euro; total now this year 901,733 kilo for 5566,49 Euro) had to be processed. This happened by Janice & Douglas and Ineke & Joren. At 4.35 p.m. was discovered in the pigeon-cage in The Keep a hatched over there juvenile brown Pigeon, laying dead on its back. Almost half an hour later the Dutch visitors from yesterday were at our doorstep with in a crate a knocked-down terrapin, with which they had been dragging quite a long time before they could reach us. See further at STRIPE-NECKED TERRAPIN. But its quite strange having December 28th still roaming-around Terrapins > enough evidence for a climate-change . . . . !! December 29th: all patients were still alive early this morning. The Kestrel was 187 (-1) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 291 (-10), green was 320 (-2), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 364 (-1), the Dark Barn Owl was 385 (+1) and the pale with the wing-fracture was 370 (+3) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 403 (=) and the Sparrowhawk was 283 (+4) gram. Tortoises: number A was 169 (=), number I was 80 (+3), III was 117 (-7), IV was 112 (=) and V was 112 (-2) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 65 (-1), nr. 2 was 61 (-2), nr. 3 was 57 (+3), nr. 4 was 60 (+1), nr. 5 was 53 (-3), nr. 6 was 25 (-1) and nr. 7 was 24 (+1) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten again very well. The Great Egret was, after the bandage-change (injury is still smelling well) and a feeding, transferred to an aviary for an hour or so > maybe hell like this in a way he isnt vomiting constantly all the given food. All Máskas stitches have slipped > tomorrow (when he is sober) injury-toilet will be done and re-stitched; this time with non-absorbable stitches. We have performed a P.M. on the Stripe-necked Terrapin > see over there. The Great Egret is in the aviary quite a lot more alert and could be fed more easily. We could continue a bit with the reorganization (a.o. electricity) and the clearing away of the House-next-door. At 2.47 p.m. a phone-call from Ypsilométopo that they had over there a geráki injured in one wing > they werent able bringing the bird themselves, because they were in the midst of the olive-harvest. So we went and picked-up the bird. They advised us taking the track via the Kremásti-bridge and to turn to the right in the (as well a track) to Ypsilométopo. That second road however was partly metalled, but the other part could have fitted perfectly on the Dakar-race > strictly speaking only to do for a 4 x 4 !! At last at arrival in the village (after first some heavy-loaded horses and mules had to be transferred) there was a knocking at our windscreen and we could . . . . walk back a good 500 meter the same road to pick-up the bird. Was a SPARROWHAWK > so see over there. And because we have now 2 females of this kind, the elder received a red foot-ring. December 30th: all patients were actually still alive at 4.50 a.m. !! The Kestrel was 188 (+1) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 289 (-2), green was 320 (=), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 367 (+3), the Dark Barn Owl was 395 (+10) and the pale with the wing-fracture was 374 (+4) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 401 (-2), the red Sparrowhawk was 283 (=) and the silver was 260 (+8) gram. Tortoises: number A was 171 (+2), number I was 79 (-1), III was 121 (+4), IV was 115 (+3) and V was 113 (+1) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 65 (=), nr. 2 was 62 (+1), nr. 3 was 59 (+2), nr. 4 was 55 (-5), nr. 5 was 55 (+2), nr. 6 was 25 (=) and nr. 7 was 26 (+2) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten quite well. Máska was re-stitched under anesthetic with non-absorbable stitches. It showed that the Great Egret had vomited the whole day all the given food we had put in with lots of difficulties. December 31st: the Kestrel was 186 (-2) gram. Barn Owls: the old Dark Barn Owl was 290 (+1), green was 317 (-3), the snow-white Pale Barn Owl was 355 (-12), the Dark Barn Owl was 397 (+2) and the pale with the wing-fracture was 372 (-2) gram. The Short-eared Owl was 403 (+2), the red Sparrowhawk was 281 (-2) and the silver was 282 (+22) gram. Tortoises: number A was 177 (+6), number I was 81 (+2), III was 121 (=), IV was 114 (-1) and V was 110 (-3) gram. Baby-tortoises: nr. 1 was 69 (+4), nr. 2 was 65 (+3), nr. 3 was 59 (=), nr. 4 was 63 (+8), nr. 5 was 57 (+2), nr. 6 was 23 (-2) and nr. 7 was 26 (=) gram. The Hedgehogs had eaten well. Máska had seen his chance to remove the bandage from the injury > was only fastened around his neck. With lots of sweet words and patience this could be removed without our hands had been damaged badly. Injury was primed with Dermisol-cream. The Great Egret had his bandages changed as well: injury is smelling well and there is no gangrene. After we removed the bandage at the new Pale Barn Owl a lot of dead tissue could be removed > the now clean injury was treated with Dermisol-solvens and splinted > no hanging cast anymore. Changing the bandage of the silver Sparrowhawk we discovered another injury at the lower side of the wing > closed with 1 stitch. The hanging right leg was in the groin cleaned from clogged (by blood) feathers > maybe some function is coming back now. In the removed bandages lots of Poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) were discovered > first the bird was treated with PINEX; the cage and the bird will be treated later with Bio-insectal. After the siesta it showed that one of Papas out of wedlock children had followed his father to eat over here > was first hiding under the petrol-deposit. By the way, was spotted this morning at 4.55 a.m. as well in our court-yard. Has the same face as Prummel. Total amount of visitors this month: 008 (total this year: 1132) Kinds of animals who are mentioned like this were for the first time in treatment in the L.W.H. Amount of kilometers (Animal-Ambulance) for bringing-in/releasing animals this month 070 (total this year 1693 kilometers) Total amount of intakes this month: 014 [wild ones: 11; others 03, (total this year 262: wild ones 180, others 082; total since the start of registration in 1996: 4309) of which: TOM CAT (Felis catus): 2; the first was Vriendje. To be exact he belongs to our neighbor Yiánnis, but he is eating and sleeping almost the whole day over here. To avoid fights with the other outdoor-cats, we have shocked his trust in humans a bit by removing both his crown-jewels. Luckily that cats are short of memory . . . . !! He left at 11.05 a.m.; walking straddle legged with stiff legs and an agonizing look in his eyes . . . . (see as well December 3rd). Number 2 was Máska and came from the Shelter in Skála Eressoú. The past summer he had undergone a surgery for an ear-tumor, but this wasnt done well > so a recidive. In any case were going to give it a try.
During a further examination, after he had clamed-down a bit, the tumor and the reason could be inspected and diagnosed (we had a similar case in 1997): to much cerumen due to ear-mites, so the cat had scratched and scratched the ear till it was infected (due to very dirty nails), which had hereafter degenerated into a wild-grow of tissue. So the treatment was only symptomatic and not causal. So this time the cause should be treated and the external ear should be removed completely to prevent a recidive. The amputation happened December 23rd: first both ears were cleaned from caked cerumen with mites and treated hereagainst. Both ears were closed for the duration of the surgery with some cotton-wool.
Start of the surgery at 8.13 a.m.; once some extra anesthetics had to be injected. Surgery was finished at 8.55 a.m.
Both right legs were (temporarily) covered with a protections-slipper to avoid scratching. At 12.40 p.m. he had eaten already, but as well removed the protections-slipper from the right front-leg > however, the injury is (still) quiet. (see as well December 25th 31st). PALE BARN OWL (Tyto a. alba): 1 male, discovered December 4th in the neighborhood of Keramiá (municipality of Evergetoúla). Open fracture right humerus, almost 1 week old. Due to this wasnt able to fly and was quite diminished. So first boosting-up a bit and thereafter starting with physiotherapies. However, the releasability is doubtful. (see as well December 6th & 10th). Foot-rings Gr-3-le & Si-8-re. The 2nd came from the pigeon-cage in The Keep. Was juvenile and sitting bulging on the bottom. Showed as well having thin shit and was quite thin. Clogged feathers were removed and fed a bit. (see as well December 8th). Number 3 came as well from the pigeon-cage in The Keep and had quite a Rhinotracheitis. Was quite thin as well. Under antibiotics (5 x 15 IU Baytril). (see as well December 18th, 21st & 24th). The 4th came from Mytiléne and was quite young. Was quite thin as well. No injuries could be detected > so observation. (see as well December 18th). Number 5 was announced as a Collared Dove, but was a nice-looking street-pigeon, which was as well juvenile as quite thin. (see as well December 22nd 27th). PEKINESE (Canis familiaris chinesiensis): 1 she-dog from our village, which was discovered by his owner this morning in one of his fields. Three days ago nothing had been wrong. The right eye should be already sometime like it was now, but there was as well a prolapse of the left eye and this was extraordinary dirty. The whole eye was cleaned, pus was removed and placed back on its proper place. CAF-ointment was used and the eye-lids were temporarily closed with 2 stitches. Right eye as well treated with CAF-ointment. The owner will receive this ointment and should treat both eyes several times a day herewith.
The owner (as tight as a drum !!) was here at 5.40 p.m. (while 3.30 p.m. was agreed, and after we had to call him several times to get him here). According to his story his sweat-heart Pepítsa was shot by hunters. SPARROWHAWK (Accipiter nisus): 2 females; the first was discovered on the road in between Mandamádos and Nápi. Dislocation of the right shoulder (due to crumpling in that little shit-cage ??) > could be put back on its place. A double hanging cast for three days. Body-weight was 231 gram > this should be in between 280 and 320 gram. Has strange coalescences left and right side in the beak next to the tongue > started with Pyralvex.
(see as well December 13th, 14th, 17th & 20th). Received a red footring right leg. The 2nd was discovered in the midst of the village Ypsilométopo. Had a crushed right humerus (3 pieces) and an open fracture. Injury could be stitched and a double hanging-cast was given. Will have 7 days 20 IU Baytril i.m. Was ringed with a silver ring left foot. Body-weight at intake was 1234 gram. He had made acquaintance in a far past with a Short-toed Eagle, but survived (one still can see the spot on the shell).
(see as well December 17th). Great Egret (Casmerodius albus): 1 adult, discovered somewhere where a lot more were present (salines or surrounding fields ?? Was walking in a field). Open fracture right humerus with a bad prognosis. During the reposition the bird started struggling and lost the last chance for a cure > amputation was the only solution.
Was discovered standing i.s.o. laying at 4 p.m. (see as well December 29th 31st) STRIPE-NECKED TERRAPIN (Mauremys rivulata): 1 knocked-down specimen, discovered in Skála Kallonís. Intestines were ruptured and manure was free in the abdomen. Was bleeding as well from the mouth. So prognosis definitively infaust and put down.
The 29th a P.M. was performed: showed to have been a mature female with two oviducts overfilled with eggs > had she been on her way to lay those eggs ?? It was warm enough to do so !! The liver was ruptured and this had another color than mammals and/or birds
