Annual Report 2002 With the lapse of time this year we noticed more & more the lacking of time to do things like we want them to be done > THE reason you're receiving now only a condensed report. There will no longer be a German version of the Annual Report as well ! Sorry !! Who wants to know more about what we're doing exactly > visit our website < www.wildlifeonlesvos.org > . * The past year lots of 'building' was done: we entered the year 2002 with only 2 temporary-aviaries in the 'Wild-Park' > now we have a pan for tortoises (a good 100 M²) & a huge part of the 'Aviary-street' (a good 42 M long series of 9 aviaries), in which our disabled birds are lodged. Almost all of the work is done by volunteers (except the digging & the basements) & own forces. Everyone who left over there 'Blood-sweat-&-tears: thanks a lot ! If we can make it financially we'll try to finish the last 4 cages/avia- ries in 2003 > about 16 meters long ! The parts that are ready now took a huge part of our 'income' : more than Û 7.400.= ! (partly paid in 2001, partly in 2002). Most of the materials for the new fences around the Wild-Park (wire-netting & stakes) is bought already. We're waiting now for better weather & some helping hands ! That's bringing us straight to our next item: a sad one (for us): 2 of our Main-Sponsors (the RSPCA & the GAWF) decided not to support us in 2003 ! Reasons: for the GAWF there were too many projects which asked for support, & the RSPCA had no money left for 'projects-abroad'. These decisions make a difference of about £ 3000.= for us . . . . . And to continue the financial part: we had in 2002 expenses of € 16997,85 ; our 'income' was € 17439,71. The specification one can find later on in this report. Besides in the 'Wild Park' we were very busy in the 'hospital-part': the surgery was tiled from bottom till roof (& we are busy with the flags as well); we renewed the lighting, the pharmacy was re-organized and the beginning was made for the building of the cages in the sick-bay. As well we started with the Central Heating > NOT ready yet, as we noticed when the temperature fell during daytime till -5¼ Celsius ! When everything is going according to our plans, we're going to rent the house next to ours > for volunteers & trainees > they'll have more privacy and we as well. here is happening a lot: the two who are ALWAYS there ! The green door: entrance of the other house > for trainees etc. To tell you what happened in the past year: We had an amount of intakes of 355 and of those 165 were animals/birds which are not our aim ! > we had 74 dogs & 75 cats ! Of those dogs 35 were for 'export' to Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria and even 1 to England. By the cats 22 were re-homed in the same countries (except England). From our 190 remaining patients, the reason of intake was: 22 traffic-accidents, 21 hunting-victims, 67 JUV.,7 were ill, 29 were injured and 44 came in for other reasons. Our results: 72 released well (or are waiting till the end of the hunting-season), 72 died, 11 we had to euthanize, 12 are still in treatment, 21 remained invalid, and 2 we had to/could send elsewhere. Our Animal-Ambulance drove 5824 KM for picking-up animals/birds and 1178 KM for releasing them ( = 7002 KM !) Our plans for the year 2003: If possible we want to finish our 'Aviary-street' & spend extra attention to the 'furnishing'. As well we'll have to place rush-mats (the Greek youth is not always animal-friendly and for them animal-teasing is a quite common pastime !) & we have to re-new the enclosure around the Wild Park (from rusty/damaged netting (1 meter high) into new, tight netting (1½ meter high) with lots of barbed wire !). If possible we'll start building the huge pan for water-fowl (about 500 M²) with some pools & special vegetation. IN the 'barn' we must expand the possibility to prepare food. A sink must be installed as well > we're planning to combine this with the construction of a watering-system for the 'Aviary-street' > now we're still dragging buckets full of water and/or with a splashing wheel barrow ! IN the sick-bay we want to finish at least 2 from the 4 planned 'cage-walls' : completely tiled in a bird-friendly color. A place where we can keep reptiles/tortoises in the most perfect condition (UV-light, heating, water, plants, etc) till they can be removed to a safer place, is also 'in mind'. For baby-tortoises that's an age of about 3 years > before that age they are straight fodder for Gulls and/or Herons ! In the wild about 2% is reaching the age of 5 !! In the place for 'Nocturnals' we want to build at least 1 of the 2 planned 'cage-walls'. Special lighting must be installed (we must be able to work there, but the patients should be disturbed as little as possible). The Central Heating must be finished in 2003 > surgical treatments below zero isn't possible !! Are there any hobbyists with some knowledge about this work ?? We can offer free food & lodging !! Most of it is already done by ourselves! The Aviary in the garden (for rehabilitation of smaller birds) should be build on its right place: with floating water, vegetation etc. The old Aviary we'll keep for some invalid (blind) birds > THEY can be in the open air during the day, & WE can catch them easily for feeding. This 'aviary-street' we hope to finish in 2003 > the left part is in use already; 4 aviaries are waiting to be finished. All built with YOUR money > the birds are thanking you for your support ! Financial Survey over 2002Positive Balance over 2001: € 8253,08 Income over 2002: SDV (sterilizations strays) € 455,88 SDV €3979,60 GAWF €1625,90 GAR €1720,37 Donations/Members/Excursions + €9657,96 Total €25692,79Expenses:Food € 4367,24 Building € 6119,12 Keeping € 1077,66 Medicines etc. € 630,33 Transport Û 1636,53 Sterilizations strays € 150.= Other: 1st Aid Station Thess. Other expenses € 3016,97 + €16997,85 > - €16997,85 Surplus over 2002 € 8694,94Thanks to Your support & because the Foundation for Animal-help Venezuela sent us some extra-money, we have such a surplus (& because we couldn't spend it yet!), but most of the surplus is meant for the new building. We're for the 'normal' expenses dependent from YOU !! An extra 'Thank You' we want to give to Mr. Jeff Paffett, who is taking care of our international website and gave us his digital camera > is in good use! As well to Mrs. Vesna Jones (Greek Animal Rescue), for her support. The Prognosis for 2003: Because 2 of our Main-Sponsors don't support us any longer in 2003, it's a little bit difficult to give a good prognosis for this year. For sure is, that the expenses will at least be as high as they were in 2002 > the prices are rising, even in Greece ! So, a very friendly request to everyone who is supporting us: Your contribution, at least € 15.= per annum: for the UK: Wildlife Hospital Lesbos, Account no 53524055 Short code 60-23-22, Bank: NatWest, 33 High Street, West Wickham, KENT BR4 0WH or come & bring it yourself ! other countries: you are always welcome to visit us & bring your contribution with you !
